1) Fresh brake pads, new HB cable- stops nice! Old shoes like polished glass.
2) All lights/indicators working- bad earth wire connection
3) Horn found, removed. Violet wire had been cut. Spliced. Horn works...continuously! Violet is live, always, even with key removed. Gray/black is the earth, that should have contact broken by the horn button. Horn button removed, therefore no contact between column and springs. What to look for now? It seems that the circuit must be completed by a connection in the column, or someone has tapped into the earth somewhere along its route. Ideas?

Always live on the violet wire is correct.

I haven't got the diagrams with me at the moment, due to being at work... but as far as I can remember the following is true:

The grey/black wire goes to the push via a connector block under the speedo (one of three there).
The "parcel shelf" supporting tube un-pops at the end (easier if you slacken the three screws which fasten the bracket to the side of the car at one end), to give access to the connectors there.

If you unplug the connector with the grey/black and if your horn still works all the time... there's probably the remnants of an alarm system still spliced into that lead.
I think it might become clear when you look there.

If not you may need to investigate another hidden place under the bonnet...

ISTR the route for the loom is behind the sound proofing up against the bulkhead/firewall on the UK passenger side under the bonnet.
It's held in place by the piping across the top (which pulls off, and pushes back on again) and one self tapping screw.

Keep us up to date.
