Got a new (old) radio from e-bay £1.99! (probably worse than the one thats in, but it looks better.....)

Anyhow, Ive taken the old radio out (with coat hangers) and although the new one looks like it will fit the hole perfectly, the connections are totally different.

The existing radio (old Grundig jobby) just has half a dozen or so wires going onto spade connectors at the back. The new one also has spade type pins, but they seem to be enclosed in rectagular recesses as though a connector slots into them.

Is the old one DIN and the new one ISO or something?

Help......I dont want to waste nearly 2 quid....

That sounds sensible.....I'll get my camera....

Forgive the dodgy photo.....

Thanks (y)

A lot of manufacturer-fitted stereos have bespoke connectors.

The good news, there's a load of people will sell you a wiring loom to convert the special fitments to ISO standard.

The bad news, if you go to Halfords they will stiff you around £15 for said wiring loom.. doesn't make your new stereo seem like such a bargain.

I'd say have a word with your local car audio specialist, see if they can sell you one a bit cheaper. Either that or do a web search and try to find the connections for your new stereo, and re-terminate the existing loom to suit.

HTH,

I think i have some of those spare, I'll look tomorrow. If i don't the middle row are the speakers (4 speaker out's), the bottom the +ve, -ve, auto ariel, memory +ve, and possibly lighting circuit.

Top row if they had any connectors I think is external amp but can't remember.

Cheers guys,

That gives me great start - I'll haved another crack tomorrow in the daylight.

Just in case Panda should burst into flames following my expert installation, does one use water or foam to put it out.......;)

Disconnect the negative battery terminal and you'll be fine. I forgot to do that once and managed some mighty impressive sparks (Not something i'm in a hurry to repeat!)

Right, finally getting round to fitting this radio....

I bought a couple of connectors/blocks from the local auto shop and thankfully all the wires are labelled - Ground, 12volt etc, etc.

I'm pretty clear with everything except one thing - on the existing connections (on the radio Im taking out) there are two wires going into the 12v spade connector, wheras all the oher spade connectors (Ground, speaker left +, Speaker left - etc, etc) have just one wire going to them.

On the new block connector Ive bought, there are two wires for power - one saying '12 v Switched' the other '12 v Permanent' - so do I connect the two wires going into one spade on the original radio to these two separate wires on the new connector?

Sorry for all the rambling - but I hope Ive explained it clearly and thanks in advance for any advice.

Ian.

PS I gave Panda a polish yesterday with that Turtle Wax Colour Magic - wow what a difference! I'd post some pics if it wasnt pi**ing down.....

The switched wire is so you can only operate the radio whe the engine key is turned best at first click then your radio will work with out the engine having to be started. The second needs permanant live to remember your pre tuned stations if its not got a permanent live radio will drop all stored station settings you have picked to store. Think I'v got that right(y)

Thanks guys.

So, just so I'm clear - is it fair to assume that the two wires currently going onto the one spade connector plugged into he back of the existing/old radio can just be connected to either of the two wires on he new connector 12 v switched and 12 v permanent?

Sorry for the continued questions, but thanks.

Ian.

I just fitted a radio to mine - both the 12v switched and the 12 permanent from the radio itself are connected to permanent lives from the car, it's fine, I just didn't have a handy switched 12v to connect. I get to keep my tuned presets but I do have to remember to turn the radio off after I've turned off the ignition or I'll flatten me battery as the radio stays on :)
