General gear knob

got a stupid question again ! how do you replace the gearknob on a 92 model panda .my gearstick has got the type that is all in one i e the knob is rubber all the way down to the gaiter at the bottom . my old panda was different it was a d reg , and the knob was able to be screwed of as it was not connected to the rubber gaiter at the bottom.also is it possible to shorten the gear lever to improve gear selection ?

I had to replace the whole lever when I changed mine for a 5-speed one.

I've never been able to satisfactorily "peel" the gaiter off the lever ...
