My engine keeps stalling at lights and sometimes between gear changes if im not fast enough. What could be causing this? Its not all the time though, the engine is strange, fluctuating in revs. When its idling ok, it will try and stall when i open up the throttle. I have recently changed the spark plug leads as they were the original ones on the car (21 years old, not bad going i supose), the carb is ok i think. Ive checked the jets were'nt blocked and blown throught them to make sure as that usually sorts it out. But not this time. I am left with only two idea's now, the spark plugs are now a little crappy due to the crap leads it had on till not long ago, or the dizzy needs to be looked at. Points might need a check.

Are there any other options, or have i pretty much covered all of it?

Cheers

PS Alternator is making noises now, and the belt slips a bit when ive got alot of electrical stuff running. (i hope its the alternator at least and not the water pump. Too close together to decide which, but alternator seems sensible choice.

To be honest I think that sounds like a fuelling problem. I could be completetly wrong, but in my ignorance I usually blame the carburettor. Possibly something to with the accelerator pump on the carb?

Fuel is another option actually as i put in unleaded before i came back to swansea and didnt put the lead replacemet additive in that i normally do. The engine is suposed to be ok without it, but i like to play safe as the car is quite old. Ive refueled it now with the additive so i am gonna see if it clears up a bit.

Otherwise a carb problem is more than likely what it is, damn bastard webers!!

I will have a look after my last exam on thursday.

Also, how can i check for bad earths? Where would not be earthing properly i mean?

Thanks!

Sounds like carb problems does the car when standing on tickover raise and lower revs on its own? in other words does it have a even tickover, If its up and down does sound like the carb. But have you checked under the dizzy cap? and have you checked the advance and retard box to confirm its working ok.

retard box

Sorry couldnt help but laugh. Will mine have this  as its the pre fire panda. I think all i can do is gap the points on mine. They havnt been changed for a while as i fitted a type of electronic egnition to mine 2 years ago, which only uses the points to get an rpm signal. So they dont get as much abuse. Lower currents running through it. I supose there is a chance that the plastic follower has worn and has changed the gap a bit. Does this sound like a possibility?

Thanks for all the suggestions. It really is getting annoying stalling in some really embarrassing situations.

Done a bit o research on the net. They all seem to suggest the carburettor is suffering from air leaks.

Great, more carb problems then. I am beginning not to like this weber. I have even started thinking about fitting twin SU carbs from a mini on there. Would be ineresting. About the right cc so might even go on without too much work. Just need a manifold adapter made up and link up a choke cable to inside the car. I'll have a look at it at the weekend after trying a few other things out first. Dont really wanna take it appart again.

Thanks for the suggestions, i'll let you know how it goes.

Cheers,
Si

Be sure any changes you make to the engine are ok with your insurance company most will say its a modification to the original specification so pass over some more cash:cry: fail to advise them you could find you have no valid insurance don't wish to be a killjoy:slayer: Mail Alan D I think he would back my comment up?

Yeah, true. It was only a thought at the moment anyway. I might do it when i have a bit more no claims and also more money

Back on the topic to hand, i checked the plugs, and theyre all good. The points look ok, so i expect its not that. Can prove that when i get home and check it with a dwell meter. So i am assuming it is the accelerator pump, and should have a replacement arriving early next week curtisy of my dad. :D Fingers crossed thats it. should take a couple of secs to replace.

I will let ya'll know!

Well i replaced the accelerator pump thing, but no change. So i then gave the pipes a bit of a blow through with a straw lol and also checked the jets werent blocked. That seemed to help, but it is still a bit hesitant. I might replace the fuel filter and check the little filter thats built into the carb. Cant think what else it could be now. At least it is slightly more reliable now though.
Although the clutch is at the end of its life :( there is no more room for adjustment so thats a take it down to the garage job as i have not the time. Shouldnt be too expensive i hope, as ive got the kit already so its just a case of them fitting it!
