Gear box oile seal

When I filled up the transmission oil on the 4x4 I discovered why it was low in the first place! the near side gear box oil seal is gone. I've got a garage hunting around for one but without luck at the minute - apparently they can't get one from Fiat Does anyone have a suggestion of who I might get in touch with for one of these?

Do you mean the driveshaft oil seal? It is part of the CV boot. Boots are available from any decent motor factor.

Re: Gear box oile seal

or, do you mean the driveshaft bearing with integral seal? what year of panda is it as Fiat changed the design from the seal in boot to seal in bearing around 1991/2 I think. I bought two bearings this year from Desira in Diss.

Re: Gear box oile seal

It's 1987. There is oil leaking out from under the nearside gaiter that's next to the gearbox. So, yes, on the front drive shaft. (forgive my general ignorance). I thought the gaiter itself was packed with grease and that the oil seal is actually on the gearbox itself hence the leak is coming from there? Sorry I don't have a picture.

Re: Gear box oile seal

The boot holds in the gearbox oil. It is quite common for them to split and leak. As far as I know all the 4x4s use the same boots. I recently bought an off-side boot made by First Line. The part number is FCB 2440. If you give that number to the motor factor and tell them you want the near side one they should be able to find the correct part pretty quickly.

i am kinda curious as to what the differences are left from right...?

I got a couple knocking around... one for the inside one for the wheel end... just wondered why you can stick them on either side really...

Re: Gear box oile seal

on the same topic what part code from the motor factors is the passenger gaiter?? which i think is the same side as his above
i need to get one for my K plate but the motor factors show 5!!! for the same car all with different part numbers. Some of the gaiters have bearings in and others just have the seal
any help would be appreciated

I think the end that fits on to the g/box is different. Just had a look at mine. For some reason it is supplied with a packet of CV grease

Fiat changed the design several times. The only way to be absolutely sure is to take yours off and compare it. My local factors were kind enough to let me have a couple of different ones on sale-or-return.

Re: Gear box oile seal

Mine had an early '87 gearbox on it with just the plain bush and oil seals, which leaked like sieves.

I changed them for the later type with the integrated bearing with the seals which are better, but to use the same driveshafts a spacing collar has to go on before the bearing+boot. It might be easier to get a good second hand shaft complete from a scrappy, as long as the seals are working still.

At the gearbox end:

Drivers side gaiter is held against the face of the gearbox housing by a plate with three bolts.

Passenger side gaiter fits over a flange and is held on with a big jubilee clip around the edge.

The gaiter looks like it's in good shape though with no visible splits.

Re: Gear box oile seal

The bearing leaks as well as the rubber if it's shot.
