Well i thought i would service the engine a little with new plugs, however things didn't exactly go to plan... the previous owner is a surfer in sunny Scotland and theres lots of sand around the holes and it looks like quite a lot went into number 2 cylinder...

Just to confirm that if i tried to fire the engine, there's a really good chance i would screw the cylinder up right? scour the liners and the piston rings...?

or wound it get blown out with the exhaust fumes?

also there seems to be the answer to Britains eroding beaches in the cars bodywork... behind every lining wheel arch etc... there's damp sand at the bottom or in the crevices... I cleaned out one but i haven't got any rust converter and waxoyl... so i will have a look around the other 3 tomorrow and visit halfords.

*over and out*

Before you remove any more plugs use an airline to blow out the rest of the sand then remova all the plugs and turn the engine over which should blow anything out of the plug hole. put the plugs back & fire up.
OK i changed all of the plugs already, but after cylinder number 2 I made damn sure the other plugs didn't get any interference from dust. ok so remove the plugs and turn it over. I can do that... oh and I don't have access to an airline in the residential car park... they were quite short sighted when designing it :D

ok, dust is fine... i can live with sand and stuff... the rust however will need immediate attention. Which i shall try and give it.

our skoda was used by a sea fisherman, took ages down the jetwash to get all that sand out and even now we still find bits!
thanks for that gem...:(

i only have a brush and a sponge... i think i have seen cans of compressed air before though... i shall try halfords for that also.

It's a damn sight easier to use the tyre inflator at your local service station.....:)

i don't think the pipe would reach my house... lets pretend for a moment the car is not going to be run on the road with

A) sand in the cylinders
B) no driving license
C) no insurance...
D) a small dog at the wheel name 'pippa'

i'm almost certain of these points... I already have the can of air... and a mini vacuum cleaner... so the plan is fully formed and poised to swing into action.

So forget about the pertrol station forecourt facilities.

Apart from that; what's the problem ?
All you need is a friend and a bit of rope.........;)

my main worry is that a blast of air from outside the plug hole would do nothing to budge the oily sand that it sitting some 3-4 inches below the hole... it's not fly away dust unfortunately.

In that case, bite the bullet and take the head off to clean it. Sorry, but it's the only real way to make certain that all is clean and safe(n)

that would involve taking off the timing belt, manifolds, top bits...

well actually that sounds quite good... I have a full gasket set knocking around in the cellar, and considering i have no idea what condition the gaskets are like on the car... it might be for the best anyway. I don't want another manifold giving problems because of water and oil mixing.

ok, so the main trouble spots will be ?

OK, i think the thread on number 2 plug is shot anyways... so changing the top of the engine may be a wise move... I have a spare 1108 from the selecta... I was wondering the cast aluminium block bit that houses the rockers is the same as the carb FIRE engine?... just a passing thought... I know the likelyhood is pretty slim... but if anyone has anything concrete it'd be appreciated.

cheers

The head will be exactly the same but there will be a prob with the mechanical fuel pump. The Selecta head is designed for fuel injection.
