After getting my 1000cl running after 2 years, I notice that there is some white smoke coming out of the exhaust especially when going up a hill. The engine feels fine and runs great, as far as I can tell it is not using up oil, so what could it be.
Also is normal 15w40 mineral oil ok to use in the gearbox or do i need 20w50?
Any help appreiated

Thanks

Will

If its white its water vapour. This is pretty normal until it gets up to temperature. Its just water that has condensed onto the inside of the xhaust while its been standing. It should (fingers crossed) disappear when the cars hot, if it doesnt and does it all the time the head gasket could be leaking. Hopefully not tho(y)

ok, its only been driven once since the replacement, however it has been brought up to operating temp a few times sitting on the drive, the blue smoke was coming out when it was relatively cold but did seem to fade as it got warmer, is this normal or are the piston rings going, also may high mileage oil help to cure it.

Thanks

Blue/black smoke is bad news but white smoke is usually not bad. Mine pumps out quite a lot of white smoke on a cool mornings..
Iinfact its a sign of an unhealthy engine that doesn't produce any vapour from the exhaust... Is the temperature okay? its not overheated recently? if not don't worry..

It produces the white vapour when cold but when driven up a hill or put under strain blue non vapour smoke can be seen coming out. As I said I am pretty sure this disappears when at correct temp but was just wondering whether this blue (not vapour) smoke was normal when cold.
No it stays nicely at 90 degrees C and hasent overheated since the head gasket replacent.

This may because the car has been parked up for 2 years as I had blue smoke coming out of the exhaust of my mum's rover as it had been parked up for 8 months. I would take your car to be pressure tested just incase (costs about £20). After I found out that there wasnt anything wrong with the car I stopped worring and after about 100 miles of low speed driving it stopped. Hope this helps.

Dave.

Its actually quite unusual to get cylinder wear in these cars, the cylinders even self adjust as they wear to keep a good seal.. My last panda was on 130k and still had compression like as if it was new. Have you changed the oil? if its been in there two years its probably rather ugly.. it only takes about ½ to 1 hour to do it and if you use decent oil it makes all the difference.

Gearbox oil is *not* the same as enine oil... I think pandas use 75-80W

There are plenty of recent posts on FF about changing your gearbox oil and which type.

I checked the level of mine last week after the garage had allegedly topped it up. Good job I did too.

ok, ive got some 20w50 oil which should do. Also how easy is it to replace the drive shaft gaiter (rubber bit) on the passenger side becuase mine is leaking quite badly or is it better to get it done at a garage.

thanks

I'm assuming the inner one at the gearbox side. It's easy to do but there's a lot to remove, I've got a bit on the guides bit on removing the bits you need other than the driveshaft which you'll need to do. However there are two types one that has a bearing on the shaft & one that has a Universal joint.
