Hi everyone,

I have a 1986 4x4 (mine since 1991 so an old friend) which has developed an awful and very loud whine from the gearbox area. It is not constant and goes away when it warms up. It is there equally when moving or standing still, when the clutch is depressed or not. It sounds just like an unlubricated bearing spinning too fast. Yes, the gearbox has oil in it!

Any suggestions please, it can't be anything good happening....

Thanks

Is it def the Gearbox area have you listened to the noise from under the bonnet or just inside the car ?, get a long screwdriver place one end on the gearbox and put your ear to the other. I thought I had a gearbox noise and it turned out to be the bearing on the timing belt tensioner :(

Thanks for the suggestion. Will try that tommorrow, in the daylight! I have listened to it outside the car but not tried to narrow it down, just sounded like a gbox noise...

Cheers,

Chris

It will be the gearbox I had that problem, it was caused by the previous owner leaving the four wheel wheel drive on premently. I think it was a bearing. Oh, also check the inner boot the one connected to the gearbox, if it splits it dumps the gearbox oil!

Thanks to all, particularly Alan D. Made the same mistake, I'm pretty sure it's not the box but the timing belt tensioner.
Should have done more work before I opened my mouth...
Thanks!
