My 4x4 has been standing for a couple of years. Now time to recommission.

It was laid up after I changed the head following camshaft seizure. The reason was identified and fixed (blocked oil spray bar), but I encountered a problem on reassembly and had no time to investigate.

The engine starts from cold on the choke and runs at a fast idle. However, any attempt to raise the revs results in hesitation and cut-out. Returning to idle, the engine runs again for around 2 or 3 minutes after which it will die.

The valve timing is correct. I have a new coil, distributor, carb, and fuel pump fitted. Refitting the old components has no effect.
Any ideas folks?

My old coil was marked + and -, whereas my new one has 1 and 15 by the LT terminals. I presume I can ignore these figures and wire the coil in the same orientation as before.
Cheers.

Assume its a 32 TLF Weber?
Air leaks are the most likely to shove up the revs so check all the hoses. However just a few other things.

Is there power to the anti run on solenoid and does it work?
That's the cable to the front of the carb.

Next depending on mileage float stuck and check both jets are clear.
Assume you changed the in line fuel filter?

The fuel pump should have two paper gaskets one either side of the plastic stand off. The fuel pump shaft/rod is also known to wear.

Vacuum advance can be checked by simple suck to see if it moves.

Only cause I had some of these fun things.....

will it rev slowly? does the choke have any effect?
sounds like a vacuum leak. intake manifold gaskets ok? check the vacuum assist on the brake servo. seen them fail causing a huge air leak. its not going to be a coil issue as its running. could be a spark timing issue not helping its rough running. you could have a blocked accelerator jet too. with the engine off and choke flap open, look down the carb with a torch and open the throttle fully quickly. you should see a small jet of fuel enter the carb from the side.

theres a small vacuum pipe on the back of the carb linking the choke flap actuator and back of the carb. this pipe splits and is totally invisible as the split happens on the back of the pipe facing the carb so you never see it.

just a few things to check.

Hi All

Before getting too involved in changing things.

is the fuel 3 or so years old or have you renewed this, if you put some of the high octane 99 fuel in the tank from an petrol can then the panda has the fuel return pipe to the tank so it should flush out the old fuel in a couple of minutes running. just bringing up the average octane rate should help.
