Hi,
I just bought a 2001 Panda Young and the heater isn't working, I think possibly I need a new thermostat - can anyone tell me where I can get one ( I think the thermostat is the same as previous classic models )? Also temperature gage showing nothing - will it come on with a new thermostat? The car is going fine.
Thanks very much, I'm a beginner at this!

thermostat should be easy to get from online or motor factors...Ricambio often recommended on here. Would've thought you would get a bit of warmth through heater even if thermostat was stuck open.... depending on how long you've run engine for. Do the coolant pipes all get hot,or are some hotter than others? Do you have an airlock somewhere? Are the pipes hot but the heater doesn't blow hot air out?My understanding is that there's a separate heater matrix which is basically a mini radiator for heating the inside of the car...that is controlled on/off from the heater control inside the car so that's possible as source of fault...is the heater off even if you think it's on....think you'll have to access the control to the matrix from between the battery and airbox behind the sound insulation. If there's some heat but not a lot then it's likely the thermostat but would've thought you'd get some reading on the gauge..although mine doesn't move for ages if the car's been standing, only works properly after it's been run s few times...have read you can test the gauge sender unit by disconnecting the wire from it & touching to earth...temp gauge should read max? You can always search on this site for previous threads on similar problems, find part numbers & parts stockists & tech guides. Good luck with the problem.

Thanks very much - I managed to find a thermostat - I wasn't sure which one, also I was looking in the wrong place!
I'm new to this malarky - after a long and complicated labour I'm terrified I'm going to break something!
I just imported the car from Italy ( a 2001 Panda Young ), it turns out it doesn't have a temperature gage - what I thought might be one is just a warning light!
I'm going to try running the engine with the radiator cap off to perhaps get rid of any air in the system?
I had a look in ( what I think ) is the heating matrix - there is no heat, also the flap controlled from the dash isn't working.
I looked at previous posts - its could be the valve on the side of the heating matrix.
Plenty to choose from! I'm a total novice - don't even know where the gauge sender unit is! But I'm here to learn - I'll get there in the end!
The car is going a treat.
Thanks for the advice

Only know my 1993 RH so yours may well be different. On mine there are two bleed valves, one on the radiator and one on the coolant hose near the heater matrix and these are used to get rid of air in the system. It's helped me in the past to park on a slope to help dislodge air. To me,if the engine is hot & the cooling system is hot then the thermostat is ok and the problem is with the heater matrix set up somewhere.... could be that the valve at the side of the matrix isn't opening for some reason so,even if the rest of the system is ok the hot water isn't getting to the heater matrix so your heater won't work. If it's not too late you don't want to be changing thermostat if that's not the problem. I assume the warning light only comes on when the engine overheats so that part of the system is probably ok! If you have not got one yet a Haynes manual is handy to say the least ?. I would imagine having to change heater matrix is pretty big operation? Think the heater matrix valve is cable operated from the slide control on the dash so the easiest check is to see if the cable is connected and working or see if you can move the valve by hand, carefully if it's very stiff through lack of use...just realised with your Panda being very late then Haynes probably won't cover everything.
