Technical Coolant leak

Technical Coolant leak

Apologies - initially posted in error - was trying to read all the similar posts...

Anyway, I posted the thread "bolt size for coolant pump" last week as I was experiencing coolant still leaking after re-seating the water pump. (1992 Panda 999 CLX)

Today I was going to once again re-seat the water pump but with a barrel screw to overcome the threaded stud (see that thread for details)

However, once the belt cover was off, I noticed that coolant was pooling in the circular indent next to the tensioner pulley, and then deduced that that was where the leak was coming from. I will attach two pictures which show the area and it leaking. I topped up the coolant and watched it come out of a small (1.5mm) hole which is visible in the pictures) in worrying quantities.

I have scoured the Haynes manual but can't find any reference to this.

What has gone wrong and how do I fix it?

Many thanks

That's a core plug, there's several dotted around the block and head. Sometimes rot out from the inside especially if the coolant's not been maintained right. Replacing it basically involves knocking the old one out of shape so you can pull it out, then replacing - you'll need an accurate measure of the hole to order a new one of the correct size, it's just a generic part. Just google "core plug replacement" is easiest - there's videos out there.

its a good thing it was that one what failed, these one under the flywheel which can be a pain to get to. as said, if you keep the coolant good it will be fine :D i change my coolant every 2 years.. even the 5 year stuff.

theres been a few posts on here about the core plugs being replaced..

they are the same engine just a bigger bore size. cant see why the punto core plugs wont fit the panda :D

All fixed.
I have to confess that my friendly mobile mechanic did the work (I was abroad for 2 weekends and my wife and son were not happy with the funky Italian classic being unavailable).
36mm is the size of this core plug.
I will diarising more frequent coolant replacement to minimise the possibility of other core plugs going the same way.
As always - many thanks for the help and advice
