Hi guys,
I recently bought a panda 4x4 1988 which has no reverse. the gear lever is very sloppy - any advice as to what to look for and linkages to replace/refurbish?

Thanks,

Jon

does the gear lever have lots of forward and backward play? if so, it sounds like the linkage has become unwelded. its common.. get a friend to move the gear lever from 4th to 3rd and look at the back of the gearbox.. you will see the linkage with a bolt/nut on top moving but the arm it bolts to, not moving. an easy fix is to put the car in 3rd, position the lever where you want 3rd gear to be (distance from the dash panel) then weld the nut, thread the nut bolts on to and the arm all together as one.
just be careful as you can damage the nylon bush (whats left of it anyway) just under the nut and arm. the worst it will do is make you have stiff gear movements forwards and backwards.. if it happens, unload some WD-40 on and all over the bolt, trying to get under the arm. after some use it will go back to moving freely.

it pretty much removes all forwards and backwards play in the linkage.

left and right slack can be kinda temporary removed by pulling the rubber gear stick boot up and tightening the 8mm bolt. maybe even pack a nylon washer behind it with some grease on it.

gear linkage kits can be bought which lets you replace most of the rubber components of the gear linkages.. sadly i have not seen any for sale for a while as i am also after a kit.

hope this helps!
