So, I thought about doing this ages ago, I bought a Cinq 899 (the car of choice because the 965 is none fire engine so mounts are in different location and gearbox bell housing differs from the fire)

I then put the cinq away and proceed to forget about this for about 2 years.

So, why did I want to do this?

Nothing but issues with the carb, the timing and terrible fuel consumption.
When it was running it would run great, when it wasn't it was a pig and I found it far to difficult to even think about using it for more than the shortest trips.

I could never get the auto choke to work on the posh cab, and the replacement carb even after being serviced wasn't great. Im really not a fan of carbs and points, its not what I know.

Have I devalued the car? yes I have, but its mine to devalue, and Im the one that drives it, Im the one that fixes it, services it and swears at it, and I can easily put the old engine back in if I ever wanted to. I have notified all parties about the engine change, i like being on the right side of legal.

So, the Donner car

I felt bad for taking it off the road but it really had not been loved, it was rusty and needed a complete overhall

There is a lot less space than in the panda!

its out!

This is a important bit, and this is the bit that is making me stress

I really wish I had jet washed this before I started!

So, at this point I have looked at the engine and the mounting locations and noted that I have to swap over the left engine mount, it just clears the crank timing wheel. I checked the clutch, the cinq and the panda clutch are almost identical.

I thought about how to deal with the starter motor and alternator side of this and though that keeping the panda starter motor and alt was the best route. that way I at least know I can start it and probably have a lot less wiring to go wrong

Fitted in place now

So I know im going to need a lambda sensor, I took a look at the cinq down pipe and I think it has a cat in it, it was really rather terrible compared to the panda design, So I decided to use the panda one and weld the lambda boss in (excuse the horrific welding run out of gas)

At this point i don't have a great deal of photos as my phone took rather a nasty bash, I have a vid blog of the rest here :

So, if you haven't watched the above, and I suppose if you have there are a number of things to deal with on the wiring side.

This is where I need to thank John aka dragon man, aka legend as he has been a star, honestly I owe that lad a case of beer as he has been there to bounce ideas off, and is a amazing source of data.

I was unable to take out the loom complete so I had to snip it though the firewall.

This main loom is pretty easy

There are a few wires that end up with no plugs on them as john details in a vid

Green = 12v to fuel pump
orange is a switched 12v live
red and white is a 12v switched earth for the ECU light

If you have a Codebox this adds a little extra in to the mix,

red is live,
orange is switched live - this sods off in to the dash and then back in the fuse box
there is then a FP wire, and a ECU wire
Yellow and white is the 12v switched earth for the code light

a mate found this which sorted me out

I have it running now, not before sorting out a few issues along the way

1) the starter motor died some where between taking it off the one block and moving it to the other which really added to a migran as it wasn't even clicking. I checked and could see voltage at the live and igsiter wire so lucky I had a spare to swap it out.

2) I put the coil packs wires on the wrong way around

3) It started but run horrible, I left 2 vac leaks, large ones (forgot to take of the old break assist vac line)

So, its running now, I have a tidy up to do with the wiring and fusing, put the exhaust back on a and wire up the dash warning lights

Its just a inline fuel pump I got off ebay that meet some spec John said. Its maked walbro but im not sure I believe that!
Coolio, I bought a pump from some german manufacturer in end and a pre pump filter for an uno turbo (pump was for an unoT too, totally overkill really but better than nto enough fuel, thats what the pressure regulator is for) - the mk1 unoT's have an inline pump with a pre-filter as standard - i guess it was too early for in tank pumps back when the mk1 uno turbo came out. Did you leave all the panda fuel lines in place? I have been worrying that it might not be upto the task of the extra pressures but i think I am just over worrying things lol. I'll post some pictures up in my thread once i get it all installed.

Nice job. What are you doing with the donor shell?

I have a narrow wall 1242 and 866 cam sat in my shed. ;)

You are literally welcome to it, but I bent the bonnet and the front lights and grill are damaged

(the bonnet hit me in the head when a gust of wind took it, and the front end got damaged when it refused to move locking both the rear and front wheels in a act of final defiance)

Id choose a better shell if I were to do something interesting.

Update time!

I have put a few miles on it, used it in traffic, used it on the dual carriage way, country lanes and off road and its been completely 100% reliable.

I haven't had to take a spanner to it since it rolled out the shed that day. I have kept an eye on collent and oil usage to which there have been none. Its holding temperature better than it ever has and cold starts/hot starts are perfect!

its a fair bit quicker than it was, it will do 70mph with ease once it gets there and will push past although I am more than happy at 65mph (GPS speed)

All in all I am very happy, I do have some work to do with a rear gearbox mount (if any one has a spare one!)

I can call this a result, I actually enjoy driving it now, which I didn't before as I couldn't trust it
