Is there an easy way to get to the ignition release... I want to exchange to cylinder which is easy enough to do, but getting there is a bind with the plastics on. Any workarounds for this ???

This is a hard job I did it on my panda and I cut up a coat hanger and bent it into the right shape and pushed it up the back and with a bit of poking and pushing I got it out.

hmmm that's a bit of a jiggery pockery technical tip there...
but i think you are barking in the right direction... it's gotta be easier than stripping the steering column down to it's skinnies.

This sounds like a typical Saturday night, with a :) lot of the drink taken 1 I'd ask again tomorrow...

OK i found a pretty good technique not involving any coat hangers (didn't have any) but utilizing a common 3mm allen key.

1. release the plastic retainer (bottom screw)
2. move the plastic over so that the cylinder is visible and make sure you move the wires from the column arms.
3. using the light now coming in from the hole for the ignition locate the slot
4. insert allen key through the hole for the ignition and position while view through the various holes below the steering wheel.
5. push up and avoid getting cramp
6. cylinder should slide out if you press the parking lights button.

please bear in mind that these instructions carry a full denial policy.
