Excuse me for being dumb but Ive just bought a 4x4 Sisley and it was in 2wd when I got it. I pulled the lever up and it locked into 4wd ok and the light on the dash came on. How do I get it back into 2wd? Do I just force the lever back down again? I didnt want to push to hard as it seemed brutal to force it any more. Is there any tips or advice on the best way to change it back? Also theres a max speed warning on the plate bolted to the floor. Is that for 4wd, 2wd or both?

Many thanks,
John S

Hi Jon,

The wee instruction plate on the carpet just in front of the gear lever refers to the 4X4. The instructions on how to use it should be on there as well.

The lever just pushes down to disengage 4 wheel drive. It should push down without to much force. If it won't go down try rolling the car forward slighty while pushing it down, sometimes that frees it a bit.

When did you get the car? Has it been sitting for a while?

Cheers for your help Steve. The car has been sitting for about 6 months but the owner has kept it clean and taken it for the odd drive. I just drove it 300 odd miles down the road and it was perfect. I changed into 4wd getting onto the boat and it killed the car. It struggled to go but as I drove further it got better. Im sure if I push the lever down hard it will engage ok but I just didnt want to be brutal on it incase I broke anything. Ill try rolling it forward as well to see how it goes. Im well impressed with its speed in 2wd. (Easy 70-80mph up the motorway) Shame its not the same in 4wd :)

Get the 4x4 Diff serviced, lubricated and oil changed! It should make a hell of a difference!

My first 4x4 panda had the same probs from being underused . . also make sure you use the 4x4 once a week tto help keep it lubed!
The 4 wheel drive wind up can be fun on wet roads! especially applying lots of extra throttle around the corners! going sideways round roundabouts is a real hoot!

Hi,
Great choice of car. If it won't push down into 2x mode; engage reverse with your steering wheel straight, push down on the lever and gently let your clutch up ... click !
Use the 4x4 at least once a week and the problem will diminish noticably. (y)

Excellent cheers everyone for your help! Does anyone know what sort of diff is in the 4x4? Viscous, lsd etc etc?

If you mean centre diff - there isn't one.

That's why the transmission "winds up" on tarmac in 4x4 mode.

There are conventional diffs in front and rear, without locks AFAIK.

I thought it was a viscous coupling that engages when the rear wheels started turning at a different rate to the rear... but i wasbn't really paying attention as i don't have a 4x4 to worry about.

That would be the new 4x4 Panda.

Wow, you have no idea how much this thread helped me as a newbie Sisley owner! I got all excited earlier in Halfords car park and thought I'd engage 4x4 to try it out and couldn't gget it back into 2wd. Until I read this that is. Thanks, Tim.

Welcome... and you lucky punter. you are now the proud owner of one of the motoring industries best kept secrets... very few other cars encouurage you to 'go on just try it' attitude that the 4x4 panda seems to bring out in people.

it's bad because no matter how stupid your ideas the Panda will do them with no fuss... which only makes you think of bigger and more silly things to try.

I know the owner of my ex-Sisley was very impressed by the time he'd got home.

Yup, I'm loving everyminute of Sisley action at the moment. Beats the pants off my Fizz any day! First expedition is going to be a trip to Pamplona this summer for the running of the bulls. Maybe I should put a clause in my will that if I get gored to death the car should go to a random Fiat Forum member?

make sure one item you don't leave home without is a self inflating bed... and leave at least 1 day to detox before driving anywhere.
