Technical Y10 Race Car Rebuild

Long time ago, I think we lifted the engine and then lowered the car to be kinder to the driveshaft angles - in those photos in gold, it was running a 1300 GTie block which is taller than the 1050 block (but of course does fit in a GTie OK)

Going to be an interesting project for Dave, even I can't remember all the bits it has - but amongst the "trick" bits is fully turreted rear suspension, mostly aluminium body

Didn't even need a winch to push on and off trailer, it is that light

Now back from Panda Camp, I thought I would spend a bit of time striping down the front end of the race car to see what it would reveal.

A fair bit of modification to the front cross member to get air through the intercooler

Super light weight radiator and standard Cosworth intercooler

Cheeky little Garrett turbo hiding in there

Leda coilovers and plumbing for the oil cooler

Love the coilovers, are they made specially or off the shelf?

Dug back around my old records, the suspension on the Y10 is not that which did the 1993 RAC - we ordered specially from Leda back in the day, the standard rear shocks were replaced with coilovers when the rear was turreted

The "cheeky" little turbo, I'm pretty sure that's basically whatever current Impreza spec was back then, but I can only remember what I can find on 12 year old web pages of mine!

Dave, you're making quicker progress than me - although I do hope to have the Barchetta in for the MOT work this weekend

Thanks Trevor. I am sure there will be a few more 'clarifications' that will be needed as I continue with the stripping out process. Any light you can shed on the development is greatly appreciated.

Good luck with the Barchetta MOT. Hopefully nothing too major....

Nothing serious. rear brakes aren't up to much, either via handbrake or foot brake despite the new pads, and a CV gaiter needs chasing

Emissions are up their with an '80s Metro, but its a grey area being a grey import - might help if the cat hadn't been removed I guess. Will let Auto Integrale give it the once over - he's trying to buy from me, but he'll want to strike a tough deal, so not looking to sell it to him

Been working my way through all of the plumbing and wiring in the engine bay in readiness for taking the engine out. Really helpful that when the loom was installed, all of the connectors had labels put on each of them. This is particularly helpful when I haven't worked on a y10 turbo or GTie engine before. And this engine is a mix of both, turbo bottom half GTie top (y)

All that is left to do before the engine is ready to come out is drain the gearbox oil (if there is any in it) disconnect the oil cooler and inner driveshaft boots and oooot she comes :slayer:

May not get this done for a couple of weeks as we are off on holiday at the end of this week. Goodwood this Sunday for the Festival of Speed anyone? :)

After a bit of a delay, the strip out continues

So far everything has come apart really easily which makes such a difference.

Just need to remove the fire extinguisher system in the engine bay and a few other bits and I will be able to start prep for paint. Speaking of paint, so far I have found gold, red, silver, grey, blue, purple, yellow and black paint in various parts of the Y10 :D. And my choice....... white (y)

More to follow.....

Its looking great and I love your wood panelled garage floor. Very swanky (y)
I only just noticed how much the arches have been extended into the engine bay to accomodate larger wheels. It still suprises me how identifiable as a
Y10 it remains despite all the modifications. What white are you thinking of? Personally I find modern whites like you see on new Ford Focus's a lot nicer than some of the dingy whites of yesteryear.

Thanks Kris

I used part of the garage as an office for a couple of years hence the wood floor. Actually is a lot better for keeping clean than the painted concrete below (y)

You do certainly need some more space in the wheel arches if you are running 17's  but the major reason was the drop in the ride height. You will also see a fair bit has been trimmed to allow driveshaft clearance.

On the subject of paint, I was thinking of Ford Frozen white. But all whites are the same, right :p

Sorry, forgot to mention, when I was taking the engine out some sawdust and other 'stuff' came out of the downpipe  Think a rodent may have made up wee home up there :yuck: Good job I didn't try and turn the engine over

The strip out continues. Starting to get quite a pile of parts

The fire extinguisher system is a cool set up that is piped into the engine bay. You can activate it from the driver's seat or remotely from outside. Same with the power safety cut off switch.

The extinguisher system will go back in once everything gets painted up

Dash panel and instruments out. Planning to replace the analogue ones with an all in one digital unit.

There wasn't much in the interior before but there is even less now!
