I've got one of those see through fuel filters and it's really winding me up. Sometimes its full, and sometimes it empty, sometimes it's neither one thing or the other. Now I know this may not be a huge prob, but sometimes when I pull out on to an island or junction the car has no power to accelerate with. I'm wondering wether this is related, i.e. no fuel in filter = no acceleration. What concerns me is how the air gets into the filter. It must be draining back from somewhere, I can't see any leaks from the pipes going to and from it, does it indicate a faulty fuel pump or anything else?
Any ideas?

Had a search round some of the other threads on 'filter' and 'fuel' and this is the edited highlights of what turned up... (most of it's is Johns)

"It may well be the pump, or some other slow leak at, or near the carb - but Pauls problem won't be a pump in the boot, as his Panda has a mechanical pump driven off the engine (1992, pre fuel injection ).

A quick look at Porter gives no information, but the early pages of Haynes suggest a repair kit is available for the pumps which can be dismantled (but not all of them can).

Rather than splashing out randomly in the hope of getting a cure, it might be worth a dismantle after the several days standing, just to prove the pump is dry - I'd expect it to take several turns to prime."

"As well as the fuel filter there is a small filter in the carb as well. This can be cleaned out using petrol. See the Haynes Manual for details."

"One of ours had a very similar problem in Eire last year and we checked all the things that you have done. It turned out to be a constricted in-line fuel filter which refilled at idle but ran out at acceleration. £2.50 fixed it."
