No no no - a mk2 Punto 8v doesn't do anything a Panda can't over winter. It also has awful fly by wire throttle & electric power steering. Now a mk1 Punto 16v with proper power steering, proper throttle, and sports suspension - then you're talking! ;)

It's only the wonderful 16v that has the FBW throttle...! :p

Aha, there speaks someone who hasn't driven a mk1 for years - try a mk1 Sporting for say 5 years, then jump into a mk2 Sporting and tell me what you think! The mk2 is nice (I had one for a while), more comfortable, quieter, better finished, etc, etc - the mk1 is quicker, much sharper, and way more fun. Just my view. (y)

Mk1 is more like a quick Panda.

Speaking of which the reason you're being warned to run away is because you WILL catch Pandaritus if you stay. You don't believe it now, but stick around & then see what happens in a few months.....

I've never actually driven a mk1 Punto. I wanted 1 for my first car originally, but the poor euro ncap performance put me off, so I ended up buying a Daewoo Matiz instead, and 2.5 years later, I traded that in for my 2004 Punto, lol! :)

Oh is it - only had mk2 Sportings. That's not too bad tbh, but why anyone ever went to electric power steering is beyond me. Well I do know why of course, but the Coupe and mk1 Punto are just such a joy to drive (and yes that's even compared to the Abarth steering).

The mk2 is definitely much softer quieter & civilised. Which is precisely why I think it's worse! ;)

Lol!! Without doubt, the worst car I've ever driven was a Peugeot 206. And if you hate the power steering in a mk2 Punto, you should have a go in a mk2 corsa!!

Have you seen a Matiz in a crash?

Best thing is not to crash a mk1 in that case, or a mk2 come to that. See, we have loads of helpful advice here. (y)

You're still here, you didn't run, you'll end up with a Panda!!!! :D

Euro ncap??...... Is that some kind of new contraception?

I know the Matiz still wasn't very Volvoesque in its safety, but it was better than the mk1 Punto. However, the mk2 Punto is a 4 star car. Very safe for its age!

You know what, I'm nearly with you on the 206. Had one as a pool car once and it was hateful, absolutely no redeeming features!

Sadly I also had the misfortune of pool cars worse than that (takes some doing, but the old Inland Revenue was a class act). The Peugrot is no3, no2 was a base mk5 Escrot (the last one when they'd given up before the Focus), which had no power, thrashed around hopelessly & sounded like the end of the world. Not as bad as the Volvo 340 though which was just awful - someone eventually filled it with diesel (an easy mistake to make!) which didn't kill it, and then it was run for 100 miles with no oil and a rather loud clatter (which did kill it). (y)

The 206 was my 1st driving instructors car. I much preferred driving the Daewoo. It was a fun little thing to buzz round in. But I love charging round in my 2004 Punto. I don't drive many miles, but the miles I do drive are immensely enjoyable in the Punto. Especially with some good sounds blaring out of the cassette player, lol! :D

I am very much testament to the catastrophic effects of hanging around in this section. I had a lovely 2006 Fiat Grande Punto with low miles and absolutely nothing wrong with it, was hanging around the Panda section for some reason and started gaining an interest, 4 months later, Punto gone, sold. Have a Panda with about as much power as a calculator Ahhhh

Oh and a Renault but we don't talk about that much....

If you need to wean yourself off Pandas, may I suggest a mk2 Punto? You still get to drive a Fiat, and you can instead get addicted to revving the nuts off a 1.2 8v just to hear it's lovely throaty rasp turning into a shout. Winter wheels for you Pandaholics? ;)
Yeah, I actually went looking for a mk2 Punto to avoid trashing the Panda when I was doing a massive commute. Test drove one, then went off to look for a mk1 instead after experiencing the joyless electric power steering. Mk1 was great though, miss that car (...got a 206 instead now:( although sad to say I'd still have that over a mk2 Punto!)

As much as I love my classic cars, I would also want my friends and family to be safe if they're in the car with me, so crash tests are important to me, lol!

That's fair enough, but the age of the design needs to be taken into account. Iirc the mk1 Punto was pretty good back in 1993 compared to other cars in its class. Things move on but an old design isn't unsafe, just not necessarily built to pass an Ncap test.

Panda's have survived some pretty big crashes with people stepping out of them unscathed, but if I'm having a big crash (I'd rather not) I'll take my bouncy castle 5* Abarth please....... ;)
