My 92 CLX (carb) has been playing up (ironically since a trip to Allen Fletcher's, but he's not to blame). On the way back it stuttered, misfired, and would only keep going on full choke/throttle.

First thoughts were fuel, and possible blocked jet. Jets cleaned, filter and fuel lines replaced. This car has a 4x4 electronic distributor so I swapped the ignition module (just in case, and in haste before another trip). Had some spark problems doing that but I think this was a red herring.

Since then problem has been intermittent, but worsening. Am still thinking fuel, so next stop is a repair kit or carb swap. Could it be a diaphram problem?

Anybody have a 32 TLF repair kit? I can get a recon carb on ebay.it but it's a 32 TLF/253 from an Uno and may be overjetted for a 999?

David

have you tried playing around with that pesky fuel cut off valve? the one the wire goes to on the carb. they are known to fail in the closed position.. they do pass a bit though.. but choke out sounds like not enough fuel getting through...

take it out and see if it still works when you earth one side to ground and the spade connector to positive. should shoot in. if not, just cut it off with some pliers then stick it back in. should run fine after that.

Hi David, I just called southern carburetters (01293 533 843) and they have genuine Weber overhaul kits for the 32 TLF carb on the shelf. Not cheap though, £49.42 including vat and postage to Liverpool.

Cheers Dave, will give them a call in the morning. Thanks for the info! David

Let us know how you get on. I've got to address (which probably means Vernon's got to address) the fuelling, non-idling problems with Betty. Like Dragon Man, we thought it was the idle solenoid. Sadly, I proved it wasn't....

Have you got the hot air pipe between the exhaust manifold and the airbox ? - had similar problems in the past as a result of carb icing when that pipe was missing / damaged.

If it is icing, it's just as likely the flap inside the airbox not functioning, you can have the pipe there all you like, doesn't help if it's just sucking from the cold inlet. Have to say doesn't sound like icing though, full throttle/choke doesn't help much when it starts (on mine anyway), just have to knock the engine off and wait a minute or two to let the engine's heat thaw it all out.

:D :D Did try for that but symptoms didn't fit, and can't currently get the thing to run for long enough to squirt accelerant into it. Feels like a blocked jet rather than air, but will do an autopsy later in the week.

Good luck – and can you take photos, please...? :worship:

I think I may be following in your footsteps, before I put Betty back on the road....

When you say you changed all the fuel lines, you did do the short stretch between pump and carb? That bit perished on mine and was dropping tiny bits of rubber into the fuel downstream of the filter, kept blocking the idle jet. Drove me demented.:bang:

Hi, yes I'd hoped it was that stretch of pipe which was giving me problems too. I had an X1/9 once which drove me mad with the same thing (got a dab hand at getting the jets out to clean). So it was the first pipe I replaced, but no joy. Have had carb off a couple of times and given it a good clean, but still no better.

This week is looking busy, so....secondhand replacement been ordered from Italy...

If this works, I will do the rebuild of my existing carb to have as a spare (so will do pics!).

Quick update: replacement carb from Italy arrived today, so was fitted this eve. Problem seems sorted. Phew. So it was the carb. Will look out for a repair kit at a good price.

So good to have the car back on the road. Loved driving it this eve. As i revelled in the car's charms, reacquainted with an old love, the exhaust rubber split and the exhaust dropped. Made me grin from ear to ear.
