Serviced firecolour last week and checked her over ready for the MOT and found a split CV boot on the nearside. A big job to change them and thanks for the advice here on other threads.

I bought the OEM parts from Fiat Crawley (top marks as classic Panda supporter). I then removed both driveshafts. A great opportunity to check & clean up the brakes.

As I removed the nearside from the gearbox, one of the tripod joint outer rings fell into the oil bowl and all the rollers fell out. I checked none were left in the gearbox and on closer examination it looks like the retaining ring had fallen out of one of them in the past and the remaining ones mashed up the edges of the tripod joint and it chewed them up into the gearbox.

When we bought firecolour and did the first gearbox oil change, there was a lot of rubbish attached to the magnetic plug, this time hardly any, so I assumed this was an old fault and the joint was only being held together by it being located in the final drive cog.

A panic call to Big Mick at Euro Car Care and he sent the replacement joint out first class recorded post and it arrived next morning.

The CV joints were taken apart, cleaned and repacked with moly grease, the new boots fitted, new triax/tripod joint (the other side was like new). The driveshafts refitted, brakes bled, gearbox oil replaced (from my rare stock of GL3) and now she's back on the road running sweetly.

I'll do a write up on the job in case the tips help others, in the meantime, here's a mashed up tripod joint ..

PS - not all the rollers shown in the pic, but they are all accounted for!
