General Head gasket confusion

General Head gasket confusion

i never had any of the manifold studs brake holding the manifold to the cylinder head. but i did break the ones that fixes the manifold to the exhaust down pipe.. they can be replaced with stainless steel bolts though.. worked for my car.

i really should save up for a new exhaust system.. mine is more patch than exhaust.

Sorry, arrived a bit late to this one, just can't keep up with all the threads these days, have I said that before?

If you feel you're getting ripped off locally I'll be happy to give you a second opinion if I'm not too far for you (SO32 3QY), I did have a customer in Hastings!

As has been said, a core plug does not cost £150 to replace, yes there is a chance that the job may take a little longer if the manifold studs break, but even then it should only be £100 tops.
VmanC thanks that's really kind of you to offer! A friend who used to have older cars gave me the number for a guy a few streets away so I took it to him this morning for a third opinion. I went armed with all the advice from everyone here and told him I would be running any quote he gave past some experts :) He seemed quite genuine and spent a long time taking me through everything and showing me the engine. He then showed me the 'plugs' (which I assume is what the mechanic last week said needed replacing) and they are very rusty! He has quoted £70 to replace all 4 and clean the coolant tank out. I mentioned I have a spare new water pump pipe in the boot so he said he will fit that at the same time as he will need to take the old one off to access the plugs properly. I asked about the stalling problem again and he said he will clean the carburetor to see if it helps but that it is most likely a seperate issue.
So basically will do these 3 things for £85. Not too bad I'm thinking? Better than £150 the last guy quoted to replace one plug or the £350 my MOT guy quoted for head gasket which nobody else seems to think needs doing.
Hopefully this will rectify the leak and I will have found someone I can trust! Fingers crossed. Thanks again to everyone, your advice helped me make an informed decision and has (hopefully) prevented me from being ripped off. He will carry out the work in the next week or so at which point I will report back the outcome!

Oh and also, I was in Italy over the weekend where every other car was an old Panda! I was in heaven. I took many photos with the intention of posting them but then had my handbag nicked with camera inside  Well at least I left my Panda keys at home! (y)

That's great news.

(y) This sounds much more like it! I'm getting positive vibes about this Guy.

Sorry to hear about your handbag . We hope to go in the Autumn, will be sure to keep a close eye on mine!

Hello everyone!
I hope you are all very well. Just to let you know my new mechanic replaced all core plugs a couple of weeks ago, cleaned out the coolant tank and fitted the water pipe. He's a gem, I'll definitely go back. Serge now seems to be running fine, with temp gauge significantly lower :)
I realise this is a dirty word, but I test drove the Polo and decided to buy it! My bike fits in the back and it has only done 20,000 miles, very clean.
So Sergio has to go :( I have listed on Ebay to start this Thurs evening for 10 days. Please take a look if you fancy being nosey or are interested in buying (although you already have Pandas so you probably won't be!). Fingers crossed he sells to someone who can spoil him. I will miss him lots, even if I am crossing over to the other side! :-/
