hello,

A couple of days ago I was driving along quite happily when the accelerator suddenly went floppy and completely unresponsive. I thought the accelerator cable must have either snapped, come off at the pedal or come off at the carburetor. I can see it is still attached at the pedal, so I've been trying to see if it is attached at the carburetor, but I can't see where the damn thing is supposed to be.

I'm sure I've got the right haynes manual, it says it's for 1981-95, 769cc, 903cc, 999cc, 1108cc. I have a 91 750l, with a 769cc engine, so you would think it was the right manual. However the pictures look different from reality and I just can't work out where the cable is supposed to be.

here's some pictures of the engine(as you can see, it's a nice sunny day in glasgow today):

As you can see, there is a green box sitting on top of the carburetor, it says hot air filter on it. It doesn't appear in the haynes manual...

I can see some cables on the side of the carburetor, I'm sure one is for the choke though, the accelerator cable in the haynes manual has a distinctive housing and spring on it, which I do not see anywhere.

Can anyone enlighten me as to where I might find this elusive cable?

Also, I spoke to someone at a local garage who told me I can only get a new replacement cable from fiat, for about 60 quid, which sounds a bit expensive, surely there is a cheaper way to get hold of a cable that fits the specs needed?

Any help and advice much appreciated.

thanks,
Richard

Well, it's raining a bit in Birmingham...

The green box is usually black...

See the attached version of your first picture, and undo the arrowed bits.

Be careful not to loose the nut and washers (if fitted).

When you remove the carburettor cover which is held on by the 10mm nut
(you'll have to unplug the breather hose on the lefthand side of it too), you should get a nice clear view of the throttle cable on the lefthand side of the carb (assuming it bears some similarity to the carbed 999 FIRE).

You might find the cable is intact, but the bracket near the carb has come loose.

Also, you're right about the cost of the cable - my old parts CD comes up around 18UKP 3 years ago, and that seems more than enough.

That's a great response, exactly what I need, thanks for taking the time to make the picture up for me:)

going to try it right now...

It was exactly where you said, took about 20 seconds to find it when I knew what I was doing. Unfortunately it has snapped, you can see the offending article on top of the air filter box here:

bah, I'll have to try the fiat garage, luckily there is one right over the road.

Thanks again for your help, I'll probably end up back here asking more amatuer questions when i try fit the replacement, or more likely tomorrow, when I try change all the brakes for the first time...eek

I was wondering, is it normal for cars to have 2 air filters? I thought there was just one that had to be replaced every so often, do you need to change both them?

Haynes isn't a bad guide. Porter has some more information in parts.
The help here from all on the Forum will usually fill in the gaps.

The Pandas I've seen have one air filter - it's the yellowy/orange thing you can see in the bottom of your last picture (fits in between the two bits of filter box, the clips there undo for a quick change).

I work on an annual change for the air filter (10K miles), you could do it on a mileage basis. If the face you can't see in your picture is black, it's time for another one.

hello again, I'm trying to get the part number for the accelerator cable as there is a guy on ebay who reckons he can get me one on the cheap...

I was looking at the diagram again, is the order number for the cable labelled 7 the part number? I assume the cable labelled 7 is what I need?

thanks

I see now there is just one air filter btw, at first I thoguht the black box was the air filter, but of course it isn't....duh

The darker part 7 is the cable for a 1990 "999 FIRE" CL.

It might not be the same as what you'd need.
