Going to do some preventative maintenance on my car as the radius rods will probably be too far gone after the gritters this year to do anything about it.

Which wire grinding wheels are best?

also after getting rid of all the rust / old under seal and welding in any new metal whats the best sort of rust treatment to use?

and then paint over it with black gloss and then some proper underseal stuff

and just underseal over that.

Any suggestions or recommendations would be grateful.
 
I have both twisted wire wheels, there's normally ok deals on ebay but failing that the disc one I guess over the cup. Warning though, using those things on rusty areas you will quickly have welding work to do!

Liberal application of kurust is a good way forward, or if you get to shiny metal, Galvofroid or another zinc based primer.

My typical underbody approach is kurust > anti rust primer > under seal

I don't waste my time with hammerite (hammer****e) expensive and chips dead easily, too be fair i'm not sure what it's like now it's had to go water based. And that's in general.
Definitely don't go for a straight over rust paint. They are ok for fences and stuff like that, not for a car.

Either of those wire wheels will be fine, probably best to have both as each will be good for different areas and corners etc.

Use a rust converter first, Hydrate 80 is a better one than Kurust, and then go over that with a Zinc primer and then a chassis black or underseal like Dinitrol 4941.

Another way which is alot easier imo is to use Dintrol 3125 Cavity wax and 4941 Underseal straight onto the rust after wirebrushing rather than messing around with the converters and paints, which need a very clean surface to work properly, whereas the Dintrol will go over a small amount of dirt no problem, it is also much quiker to apply as you don't have to wait for it to dry for days.
 
Another option is POR15. It's maybe a little more expensive than some of the others, but it certainly goes on well. I can't comment on how it lasts as I only applied it 6 months ago, but nothing has rusted yet.

I also found an old fashioned wire brush to be useful getting into the more awkward places.

Guess we all have our favourites, and any work/treatment is usually better than none! My own preference (after a bit of experimentation) is a converter like Dinitrol's FC900 then the Dinitrol underbody stuff. Use the cavity wax too for the box sections, especially around the rear of the car. Good luck, it's messy!!
