Hello All,

Having owned a number of Fiats of the Uno and Panda variety I noticed that a number of parts are interchangeable. To an extent. As well as being into fiats, Off-Roading is a rather interesting pasttime of mine. This got me thinking...

The Panda 4x4 is cute, a little bit fun off-road, and is light enough to be pulled out of muddy trouble by a couple of reasonably sized fellows. Back to interchangability; what if a Uno engine were to make its way under the Panda 4x4's bonnet. What if the engine was the 1.3/1.4 turbo...

Comedy moments would surely follow.

Failing a straight engine swap, there might be the possibility of attaching the the Uno turbo's engine and gearbox to the Panda 4x4's transfer case. The gearing would most likely be horribly wrong, but it could be fun.

I was just wondering if anyone had come across any such crazy machines, or if the theory is so horribly flawed that it wouldn't even get off the ground. So to speak.

P.S. - Somebody did mention to me that the Panda 4x4's poor little drive shafts might not like too much power. And might break...

One of my workmates knows a bloke who fits massive engines into small cars as a hobby ,and one such car he converted was a fiat panda with an uno turbo engine. Apparantly, it was very hard work. Fiat sell a turbo unit for the 999cc cinq engine however. If the uno gearbox was to be used, then uno driveshafts would be used.

i'm sure i have a foto of a flame spitting monster panda i met on a dark night at the ace cafe a couple of years ago, apparantly the maker/owner had stuck in a ford turbo unit, anyone remember this one?

you can get turbos for the 1108cc Cinq engine, so i suspect it could be adapted to fit a panda, its gotta be easier than trying to drop an uno engine in.

Maybe get a 1242cc FIRE unit, new cam, 40mm TB, remap (Tricker.. has this, and kicks out 95bhp on his n/a 1242 8v). The turbo it. That should be enough power, and not quite as awkward.

The uno turbo engine isnt a FIRE unit is it?

this sounds mint! ive thought of doin this with a mate of mine for quite a while! also had the crazy idea of putting ANOTHER 1.4 uno turbo engine in the rear of mine! twin engined, 4x4 uno turbo hehe

if i was you mate, it sounds like it would be easier to turbo the existing panta 4x4 lump from what the above have said!

Dunc

IIRC, the Y10 Turbo was a modified 903cc bored to something around 1L (998cc?). I know its not FIRE, and my understanding is that its the older block / head design.

You guys are all looking at the wrong side of the gun, it's not the engine you need to worry about(that can easily be done with some work, i know a 1242 8V is a straight swap with little work)

the problem is the tranny on the 4X4 can't take over 100hp (how do i know i broke one with a 1242 8V) so if you guys can find a way to streghten the original or find a replacement then sure it'll work. i even know a guy with a 2L toyota engine in a panda(off an 80s corolla)

Any pictures?

EDIT: Well pointed out. Also made me smile as if a V8 fits in a Panda – will fit an Uno :) Thanks smokeme!

I'll dig around to see if i can come up with any pics, or i'll take some next time he comes around. i'm still trying to get pics of my panda turbo on the net, if my carb version made 150hp guess how much an MPI version will make:D

I know the 1242 16V fits with some butchering of the fenders so i would imagine you could also fit the 1.4 from the Tipo, i don't think it would be legal though;)

Going back to the Y10 Turbo...

The NA engine was the 999cc FIRE as seen in Pandas

The turbo was 1049cc FIAT Brasil / Brazil (not sure on the spelling) engine with I believe an IHI turbo (don't quote me on that).

I stumbled across the Y10 some time ago and still want to get a Y10 Turbo.

They seem to be rare than rocking hors poo, though.

Yep is an IHI turbo so a MK1 uno charger is a good upgrade yeah they are quite rare..

Although I know of at least 6 turbo's and one of those is in my garage ;)

A Y10 turbo is great until you need to rebuild, then you notice they don't make pistons anymore along with some other parts which will need to be custom. Just a point;)
