Silencer dropped off!

Well, that will teach me to make rash statements about things not going wrong in other threads...

Coming back from work along the A27 last night I noticed I was getting a bit of a blow from the exhaust, that nice gentle raspberry sort of tone, and I thought "I really must take a look at that at the weekend". With near perfect comedy timing, there is a godalmighty roar, and I can see sparks behind me, with and a line of traffic jamming on brakes just in case the things went flying...

The exhaust pipe had rusted though at the join to the silencer box...

Anyway, I've found a replacement in the local motor factors (34 from CPA in Henfield, really quick and helpful), and got the old bit of pipe loose, so any top tips for threading the new one in?

Cheers
John

mine went in the same place, strange! woulld need to jack the car up high, or if you have a high curb, drive on there then jack up, more height, I got some smaller diameter pipe and ground some off and ramed it in to the exhaust box then slid it into the pipe, tight fit, then put some exhaust paste around the pipe, let it warm up, done!

Put axle stands on the body so that the rear suspension hangs down, and use assembly paste. It's a straightforward job so you shouldn't have any problems.

The worst bit is when you have to get out the car and pick up your back box...

...we've all been there...

The rubber mount held it place so I was dragging it down the road. Never had one go like that before...

Anyway, I replaced the exhaust yesterday, and other than not knowing about assembly paste until after I was done, it went fine. I spent an hour or so clamping it back together again. Ended up using the old one as well to stop it blowing. I may prise it apart next weekend and have another go with the paste, but I'll see how it holds up this week.

VmanC, did you have any recommendations for what to use?

My top tip for this? Take of the rear N/S wheel for better access to wiggle the new pipe on... And use assembly paste! Doh!

Gungum is the the one I use, but only because it's readily available in most places, they're all pretty much the same really. Just make sure you get assembly paste and not repair paste .

Re: Silencer dropped off!

A very common place for them to go there, mine went last year. Earlier cars only have a single rubber mount at the back of the box but later ones have one at the front aswell, presumably to try and stop the pipe from going in that place, obviously it wasn't a very good solution!
