Has anyone reconditioned the propshaft of their 4x4? Mine is shaking and clunking and sounds like it not going to last much longer ! Can any of the parts be replaced at all?

You can replace the two CVs at the front and the two UJs at the back as well the the rubber mounts on the centre mounting plate.

The UJs should be available as they will be just standard joints, however the CVs and the rubber mounts are specific to the Panda and are no longer available. If these are shot then it would be better to find a good secondhand shaft.

Thanks, the garage did try to explain what bits needed replaced and did mention it was the rear ones, so here hoping they are the ones that are easy to source !

Luck is on your side then!

Make sure you check the gaitors on the front CV joints as they can split and let all the grease out, which obviusly means the joints wear out.

The gaitors are available from Fiat for about £25 each, however after I had ordered some I spoke to a propshaft specialist who said they could get them no problem and no doubt alot cheaper!

Replacement UJs - these should be OK.

Propshaft supports are a bit more tricky. Hard to get in the UK but there are plenty on Italian E-bay.

If you go on Italian E-bay and put in 'SUPPORTO ALBERO TRASMISSIONE PANDA 4x4' using the 'classico' search option, propshaft supports will come up.

There are a lot to choose from but they are all a lot of Coin......

As the rubber on my prop supports had rotted through, I bit the bullet cost wise and bought a pair off Italian Ebay last year. I asked a few sellers first to get an idea of postage costs and also if they were prepared to post to the UK. Initial correspondence with the sellers was by using Google translate :) but my eventual seller had good English. The pair of supports took a week to arrive.

When I first got the car I got drive shaft gaiters replaced at the front somewhere as the gearbox was leaking oil out them, is that the ones you are talking about ?

Garage also mentioned that they could send the propshaft away to be recondtioned if I couldn't find the parts for them to fit. I have just bought UJ's off ebay that say they are for panda 4x4 so maybe they will be the right ones.

No they will be the ones on the front driveshafts, I am talking about the ones on the front section of the propshaft.

You could have it reconditioned but if it is just the UJs that are shot they should be fairly easy to replace, so might end up abit more costly sending it to a reconditioners just for that when your garage could do it for you.

Man at garage talked about needle bearings or something that wear away (I really don't know about the technical details and apologise if I'm not talking any sense  ) so would that mean UJ's or CV's ?
Just looked on eper and now see where the two different joints are (cv on page 1/4 item 5 and uj on page 3/4 item 3)

Thanks again (y)

The CV joints have a substantial ball and cage bearing in them and the UJs have needle roller bearings.

I reconditioned my own prop about 2 years ago but all it needed was new CV gaiters and a good greasing. It's not a difficult job but it is quite time consuming.

It may not be the prop in any case. It could well be one of the supporting rubbers which are well known for perishing and tearing. Check these first before you remove the prop as you might save yourself a lot of unnecessary work.

It is an easy job to strip and replace the gaitors.

Don't forget that if you strip the propshaft into sections to mark / align each piece in relation to each other, otherwise you will have to get it balanced.

Also do not put the large ball bearings in each of the front and middle CV joints in the wrong place. you can get them wrong in relation to the cage. Your car will then not turn corners.

I learned the hard way!

Does anyone know the part number for the cv gaiters, is it 5978959?
Also the rubber mountings, I cannot see what part they are on eper.
Think its these two bits that I need.

Got my propshaft fixed now.

It needed the CV joints eper part number 71781823 which I got from here
http://www.deltaintegrale.com/details.php?C1=&C2=&id=2074"

and the propshaft mounts part number 7541164 which I got from here
http://www.akkussan.com.tr/English/index.asp?sayfa=YeniUrunler
(emailed at 9am paid via PayPal at 11am and arrived the next day (y))

Also got the UJ joints as previously mentioned on this post.

So now sisley back on the road for another year :D

Two for 125 euros, delivered, which I thought was quite good.

Had the first proper dirve in it tonight. At first it seemed to have lost the 'power' that it had before but that seemed to free off after a mile or so and went back to being as powerful as it used to be (ie not very :D) , though above 40 mph it seems to vibrate a bit more than it used to, stuff in the rear view mirror was jumping about at bit. Does that sound like something I need to get checked out?

I was worried that it could be misaligned now. Hopefully garage can check it and see if there is anything they can adjust or is there anything I could check myself?

Anyone know of anywhere in Scotland that can do propshaft balancing?
and how do they go about doing it? do you need to send the propshaft to them? or do they come out in a van and do it on your doorstep?

Does anyone know how to remove the rubber mounts? I'm changing one on mine that has perished, but can't get the thing to move, I've removed the central nut and CV flange OK, but can't remove what looks like the metal protection for the bearings, tried using a puller, but its just going to bend them....

Any help gratefully received!

Apologies to resurrect an old thread but I have been on the case of prop shaft recondition recently. I have done CV's (Alfa 156's) centre bearings (from proptechnix on ebay part not currently available) and UJ's bought off ebay from the link above. I put all the shaft back together and on the car and like the other poster in here I had vibration issues. Took the complete 3 part shaft assembly to Dunning and Fairbanks in Leeds (http://www.dandfltd.co.uk/) to get it rebalanced and they have informed me that the shaft needs two new UJ's, when I asked why they said because the ones in there are cheap Chinese s**t and they won't last. I don't know if anyone else has had any long term experience of these UJ's to be able to comment but didn't want to go against these guys experience, and I would be happy to never have to get the prop shaft off again so if the additional cost means that then i'm happy, just a bit poorer!

Thought I would share my experience for other 4x4's who I imagine have/had similar rattling CV's joints!

Thanks
Michael
