Well busy day got to work on a bit of spark plug and leads replacement, With bosch plugs and leads, and a good carb clean and airbox scrub and inner polish.

Spark plug lead number 4 was faulty the connector to the plug had unattached itself from the lead meant the lead was bobbing up and down on the plug!!(n)

The strange squealing has all but stopped!! im sure its something in the alternator that was causing the noise. The belt is fine.

She was really flying tonight. New oils on the way. Gearbox and engine. Gone for silkolene ester fully synthetic 5w40. And redline MT90 for the gearbox with additive.

Three things can make odd noises round the front of the engine:

alternator bearings (usually the front one - this can have a shortened life span by having the belt too tight)
Cam belt tension roller (can squeal on start-up sounding like alt bearing)
Water Pump bearing (less likely to squeal - more like a lower droning sound)

Takes a bit of practice, but by using a long bar or length of tube you can 'listen' by pressing it (securely!!) against the areas with the engine running. The alternator and the water pump are quite easy to access and eliminate before removing the cam belt cover.

Using this technique I've discovered that the whinging sound on my 4x4 is from the water pump bearing... yet another job on the list!

Is 5/40 not a bit thin? Thought they were 10/40.

as for gearbox oil I have to admit I'm a firm beleiver in the good old engine munti grade oil :D

Been into great detail on this subject with opie oils, 5w40 fully synthetic should be ok. But no thinner. Im a great believer in fully synthetic oils and the silkolene has ester. Its a very clever oil.

As far as gear oil, i have tried them all and ive found redline is the best. The mt 90 should be ok.
