Help sought again.

Finally got my 4x4 Mot'd and Taxed and on the road, but two problems still persist.

1. Nearly siezed engine driving from Leicester to Nottingham, due to overheating. Ignition / fueling fault - vacumn advance blown, new part ordered. Apart from initial throttle opening should vacumn advance affect running throughout rev range?

2. Knocking from front near side wheel - regular knocking with each revolution of wheel, increases with speed, some vibration felt through floor. Increases slightly turning to right, decreases turning to left. No knocking on full lock, either way. Wheel not buckled, tyre pressures correct and no bulges. Visually everything look perfect. Wheel does not get hot and have replaced discs, pads, calipers, in any case. I'm left thinking must be driveshaft, but as it does not knock on lock am puzzled?

Any help appreciated.

Aaah...you've the same symptoms I notice on my car...the knocking noise accentuates when cornering to right and decreases/disappears on the oppiste side!Together with the "knocking" there's a vibration on the pedals and the floor...I replaced the left CV joint, but I'm thinking it's the right one as the new bits didn't cure the noise :bang: .By the way, take a look at the post named "Odd viration/ wheel wobble" :)

The nocking on mine was for 2 reasons: -

1. The middle leaf of the spring was broken, which was not fully evident untill it worked it's was out.

2. There is an exhause mounting bracket just in front of the rear bumper. The exhaust can at times move back and forth on the mounting causing the nocking you describe.

The spring is waiting any attention from me and the exhaust bracket was repaired with a slight touch ;) from a hammer to close the gap in the bracket.

Might not be the same but worth a look.

The vacuum advance is effective except at full throttle, when there is very little vacuum.
The retarded ignitiion gives flat performance and poor fuel economy - you get more go on light throttle openings when the advance unit is working, and the timing set properly.. it's worth doing.

Regarding the odd feel/noise - I've just swapped wheels front to back on the passenger side which happened to fix a roughness felt through the steering which started recently*: it felt a bit like a coarse road surface, even when running on very smooth, although with a bit of a road speed related pattern to it.

I've looked carefully and can see no bulges or bumps, and even ran it up to 45mph indicated while on the axle stands, and couldn't see or feel a problem.

Just because something looks OK it might not be.

* I've got no idea what my youngest daughter did to it one night, but I suspect it involves a kerb, and some heavy parking.
The front plastic wheel trim on that side has been damaged - it gave me the clue for what to try.

Cheers for the advice guys.

Alas I think the knocking may be something more serious. I probably failed to describe it acurately enough, imagine a 12lb lump hammer smashing against the wheel every time it turns!

I've had another listen with someone else driving and its very hard to isolate the noise. Its definately the near side but not necessarily the wheel. Could the inner cv joint fail and if so what symptons would that produce?

Cheers.

As far as I can recall, the inner joint is a tripod arrangement, with needle bearings inside the three caps. Those caps slide about in slots in the diff.

It's held in place with respect to the diff. by the fact the other end is located securely in the hub.

If any of those needles have been lost you'd get some spectacular noises, but I'd expect the noise to be regardless of steering lock.
Before pulling that to bits, as you're 4x4, is it worth a look at the joints on the prop. shaft?

Failing that you may have internal problems with the gearbox.

I might be wrong, though.

The bad knocking on the near side front of one of our 4x4 Pandas was caused by the bottom spring mount on the front suspension leg cracking; allowing the spring to move against the shocker.
