Hi Guys
I've known that my rear offside wheel bearing is on its way out for a little while now ,but its started to make some nasty noises on hard breaking so time to do something about is.
I have not found any info on the rear 4x4 axle in the manual I have it doesn't seem to cover the 4x4.
I was wondering if someone could talk me through the bearing replacement procedure. Also it would be helpful if I could find out the bearing specs and any seals that might be required before dismanteling it.

many Thanks

Rick

Hey mate

Don't waste your time trying to change the bearing dude. Just replace the entire rear hub assembly attached to the solid axle with the 4 stubby bolts.
25 squid brand new on ebay!

1. Undo the 4 wheel bolts and remove the wheel.

2. Remove the two brake shoe securing spring clips and remove the shoes.

3. Undo the 4 stubby bolts holding the hub to the axle.

4. Pull the hub off the splines of the half-shafts (It may pull the half-shaft out of the diff but don't worry. Just hold the shaft and hit the hub edges with a rubber hammer until it falls off and slide the half-shaft back into the diff, being careful of the oil seal in the end of the axle housing.)

5. Slide your new hub onto the protruding half-shaft spline.

6. Secure the 4 bolts to the spec torque setting (45Nm I think)

7. Replace shoes and wheels and check oil level in the diff

Hi Guys
Sounds good but on searching ebay all I came up with for the 4x4 was front hubs at £75 +£12 postage each ouch!!!!
Could you point me in the right direction for these £25 jobs if still available.
I searched under fiat panda hubs.
If not ,any Idea of the bearing spec + any seals that are required.
Thanks
Rick

I think the add I found was Recambio's Banstead.
I'll keep looking all the bearing kits I found were pricy too.
I'll have a ring around after the new year's out of the way.

Regards

Rick

It's the smart thing mate. You will find 'em, it just might take a week for them to turn up.
The bearings were never designed to be replaced on the Panda's, just the entire hub, (which seems a great waste to me).

I suppose its advisable to replace them in pairs eg both fronts or rears.
Piggy bank is a little empty so it depends how much I can get them for.

Rick

Na, It wont have any adverse affect replacing them singularly. The have no bearing, (get it?,.. bearing,.. lol ) on safety or how the car acts. They spin smoothly or they're knackered.
It's only shocks and tyres that should always be changed in pairs.

I realise this is an old thread, but very useful it is.
Iv just bought a G reg classic Panda 4x4 which I was told had new rear bearings last year. This year the mot man detected slight play again... I suspect last year he didnt fit new bearings as described, or did something wrong!

Anyway, on fast-ish cornering and with even the slightest turn of the wheel, the back end groans and protests. I assume this is wheel bearings? Nothing in the rear diff etc that could be causing it? I dont really want to spend £160 on bearings if it doesnt fix the problem...
Cheers

Might sound daft but do you have the 4wd engaged? New owners often don't realise the system is only designed for low speed use on loose surfaces, if you're running in 4wd mode on the road for everyday use it will complain badly and won't last long!

edit: just spotted you've had a Sisley before so probably not making that mistake..

Ok, old thread...

Is the bearing replaceable if one has the tools/press etc?
I see the convenience of replacing the whole hub, but here hubs are nla or cost more than my car.

has anyone just replaced the bearing?

regards,
nick

PS I dont have a hub at hand to monkey with, only the ones on the car

not really, they are pretty much all one thing. the only option i guess would be to somehow get the bearing re-cut and larger BBs fit into it.. if that is actually a thing.

i have some slight play in one of my rear wheels.. i just packed the bearing with loads of grease and just keep doing it every year or so.
