Hi, new member here my son has a FIAT Panda fire fizz 1993 and pretty lucky we are as there is no rust to speak of!

I had to fit an alternator today and mio Dio it's a bitch to fit but got it in there after removig half the electrics up top.

Now comes the interesting bit- can't fit the belt until you move or remove what looks like timing/crankshaft sensor - should be a simple job except for the fact that the allen bolt is made in the Moto Guzzi factory from Toblerone. (You've guessed it someone has rounded it and now will not budge). I cannot find anything in Haynes manual about how the sensor is removed - I am guessing that once bolt is removed the sensor will be free to move, is this correct.
Is this correct way to fit new belt??

diagram i have is only showing alternator then crank pulley, and explains about losening bolts and fitting.

The sensor your on about will be pointing towards the inside of the timing belt? to check position of crank?

Cant think why it would be in the way.

Are you trying to fit from above? this would be a pig to do! My manual suggests removing wheel, then a "spalsh guard", held on by three bolts, then the alterntor is easily accesibly.

If i've made no sense, soory, another member might have the answer

Yes you right...fiting alternator is not very easy....there is not enought room because of "injection" equipment:)
...back to belt...
Unfortunately there is a sensor in Magnetti injections (system with twin coil)
so you've got 2 option...take sensor out, but I couldn't...it sticked and didn't want to go out so I decided to take that timing/alternator wheel and fit belt...it's quite easy - just 3 bolts and done...

it's not so bad...
try to drive (driver front site wheel) on some brick (or stand if you have)
then put some cardboard on the floor...right tool (if remember it's 13)and take that wheel off...put belt and fit it back...make sure that you put in back into right place (there is smal "sign") You can't do it wrong :)
make sure that you tidy bolts !!
and done:)
 
Hi and thanks for answer. Yes we did fit from above, but seemed less work than mounting through splash guard. The sensor points at what I imagine is flywheel (toothed) and is about 2-3 mm too smalll to fit belt. Anyway I have done it now, however car will not run and I suspect it's the sensor is wrongly positioned.
 
Hi, I did manage to get belt fitted and now I suspect that sensor is wrong or damaged as car will not even run, tries to but ony coughs and spits. Any idea how many mm it is meant to be away from toothed wheel?? it seems to be able to only sit in 1 position
 
if the sensor allignment is disturbed then it won't run. check for fuel and spark when cranking, assuming both are ECU controlled and you have neither working then you can assume the sensor is allignment is at fault.
 
that small metal wheel for alternator belt can be fitted in only one possition (there is some inset)
Sensor shoul be, I think, about 3mm from wheel (max)

It could be sensor connection...take one spark plug out and check if there is spark...if not ECU might not have information from sensor and won't start...
if there is spark, sensor could be in wrong possition (I don't think it's possible) or there is something else...
