A prize for the quickest answer: is a 1989 Bianca 4 speed or 5?? We've bought one sight unseen and I suspect they were all 4 speed, but am secretly hoping I'm wrong!

I'm guessing 5 speed. The Bianca I think was a special addition based on the 1000S, which I think came with a 5 speed as standard?

I would have thought it would be a 5 speed, but I dont know for sure, was there ever a 999cc available with a 4 speed?

Cheers Kev (and everyone else). Sounds like you're right - though I wish you weren't (we're planning to use the car for a long trip and don't fancy the idea of buzzing away for hours on end on the motorway). Am trying to think of a prize, it has to be Panda-related but light to post - how about a set of airbox clips!? 
I think it is probably 4 but you can never tell with FIAT! They seem to fit whatever they have left in the spares bin at times!

Yep, 4 speed as standard but with the option of 5, so if your lucky

Mine was 4 speed and used it on the motorway from Brighton to the Midlands and back quite regularly without any probs apart from the fan switch going once, thought it was the head gasket at the time

Sounds like I shouldn't dismiss the 4 speed then. Hope the first owner shelled out for the extra cog though! Thanks again
Majority of the carbed ones were (except the 'super' and 's') iirc.
4 Speed is ample on motorway. Don't forget 4 and 5 speed are different and have different ratios I think. So a 4 speed isn't like 5 speed with fifth missing, as their ratioed slightly differently (I think).

Nope, the 4 speed is indeed a 5 speed with fifth missing. Ratios 1 to 4 are the same in both boxes. If you are used to a 5 speed then the 4 will feel painful on the motorways I'm afraid
jon your thinking of the punto EL i think where the 6 speed is more or less same ratios spread over more gears as the 5 speed
Oh well I only thought 750s had 4 speeds, but obviously not. According to my haynes manual the four speeds have a similar final drive to the 5 speed on all models apart from the 750 which has a lower final drive. All the gear ratios are the same on every box though.

Tell me about it!! Feel like i'm screaming the nuts out of Carina at 65!
Heikes Bianca hits 90mph no prob (fiat speedo!!)..and zips along just as well as any other iv driven...
