hi hopin some one can help my panda wont start or if she did she'd stop soon after. i believe its a distributor problem as theres everything there but spark is erratic. it fired just by takin off the neg battery terminal. :confused:I figured i'd strip down the distributor and have a look but it doesn't have points inside like i was expectin to find:( now i have no idea how it works. but i assume there shouldnt be continuity between the black pick up on the top plate and the body so i assume this is the trouble if not back to being lost in the dark any help would be great cheers

i've been adventures and pulled it apart the pick up off the spider which i guess is that black box thing with two wires going to it on the plate mounted upside down looks fine but i'm wondering is the metal strip (Guess the pick up) ment to have continuty between that and the plate if not i think i may have found the problem if not still need help:bang:
cheers for the welcomes

I think it might bve so that black box on the side is that repairable cos i cant see anyway of looking at it do you know of away of fixing it?

If you have the distributer with the ignition pack on the side, they do tend to pack up occasionally, what it may be worth doing is asking your local motor factors if they have a tester, to see if it is the pack at fault.
If it does come to changing the pack for a new one (generally theyre not repairable as theyre sealed in a compound) change the ignition pack, and also change the magnet inside, as sometimes these can also fail.
Not a bad job to do, but definately easier if you take the dizzy off the engine. I beleive ricambio sell the goodies(y)

hi all just realised I'm still having the same problem from this thread I'm not entirely sure on the model but its a 4x4 with the soft top roof if that helps?? I've changed the ignition pack on the side twice the magnet with it the second time and its still not quite right do they sell a complete overhaul kit some where as I'm wondering if theres play in it although I'm pretty sure i replaced the whole thing not too long ago.... must start keeping receipts!! is it a common problem that pack playing up?? as it seems to cure the problem for a bit but then starts playing up again after near on a year(ish)

Hi Pudsey! I have a 4x4 Sisley 998cc 'FIRE' engine with electronic ignition (EI). I have been having problems similar to yours and thought it was the EI unit. Talking to the local Fiat agent, he said they always changed the EI AND the cable together as the cable was a bit sensitive. I only changed the cable as a 'starter' as I could see it was a bit rough and it cured the problem - not cut-outs for the past week.
The cable connects from the EI to the coil with a connector half way along. You need to undo the two screws which hold the unit onto the black plastic backing plate and a further screw which clamps an earth wire as you remove the unit.
Have a look at the cable - maybe its very dirty or cracked with age. Its a lot cheaper than the EI!!

Hi Pudsey! I have a 998cc 4x4 Sisley with the 'FIRE' engine with electronic ignition (EI) - the finned heatsink on the side of the distributor.
I too was having similar troubles to yourself and thought it was the EI unit. Talking to the local Fiat agent, he said the always change the EI AND the cable together because the cable is a bit sensitive. The cable connects between the EI and the coil and has a connector half way along. Have a look at the cable, maybe its very dirty at the distributor end or cracked with age. I changed just the cable because I could see that it was in poor condition and it seems to have cured the problem - no cut-outs for the past week -and it costs a hellava lot less than the EI!!

Update.. well 2weeks on and started to play up again, so have bitten the bullet and replaced the electronic ignition as well. When it cut out the EI heatsink was pretty hot and pouring cold water on it from a nearby horse trough (read bath) got it running again! Trust this is the end of it because there's only the coil left.... Pete
