Technical Ignition Barrel

Yes the wheel and the cowling have to come off unfortunately. Does anyone know how to remove the lock when you don't have a key? This is the part that I am stuck with  obviously the barrel housing has been removed from the column but can't find a way of splitting it!

The tailgate is easy though it's just a matter of dismantling the lock mechanism on the inside of the boot lid, takes about five mins

You have to drill the whole ignition switch and barrel off unless you can get the lock barrel to the 'mark' possition with a screwdriver like you would a key. :(

ever thought of trying another panda's key in it....?

Talons key fits Fallouts.. and the other way around.
even some of the cinq keys "go in" to the panda locks.. if its worn with a jiggle it may turn it. worth a short..

if this really was the game "fallout".. lets say with fiats, im kinda at level 99 lock pick skill.

Tried sets from both my other Pandas - no joy.

Good idea VmanC I will give that a blast, and CLS sounds good to me we could always practice on the white one

I will let you guys know how I get on!

Unfortunately the cowling does have to come off, tried it on our 750 a month or so back and its not possible with it in place :(
Is it REALLY NECESSARY for the cowling to come off? To release the barrell, is the hole that it needs to be inserted into the small rectangular one that I can see from the cowling's underside?

I'm wanting to change my ignition barrel to match the rest of my new lock set and I got the steering wheel off OK , but can't remove the indicator stalks. I removed the philips head screw and the 8mm nut and bolt to undo the clamp that holds it to the steering column, and the indicator switch unit is now loose but won't pull off. I don't want to pull hard at it and break it; I've given it many attempts and it won't budge.:bang:

It will be the wiring that is holding it in place. Drop the dash roll down by undoing the screws on the end plates, this will give you access to the wiring under the cowl. Undo the plugs and then you can feed the wiring up through the cowl whilst you pull the stalks off the column.

It also helps to undo the cowls lower screw so it is free and therefore more room to release the wiring.

Thanks varescrazy, but I wasn't too clear following the link to the thread nor the thread linked to within it. I'm not sure how to release the barrell once the key's turned to 'mar'.

panda1408 - I didn't state it initially in my post but I had the dash roll down, the plugs disconnected and the bottom cowl screw removed (though the cowl was no less loose for it) and I could only pull the indicator switch unit out by about 10mm. I don't want to force pull the switch unit out for fear of breaking it and thought I'd try and change the ignition barrell with the cowl in place even if it is more difficult. Before doing all this I had referred to the Haynes manual and searched a few threads here and everybody says it simply a case of loosening the clamp and the indicator switch unit will just pull out; not for me it's not.:bang::mad:

I'm all for trying to change the barrell with cowl on if anyone's ever done it?

Have a look below (page 29 and 30)

I was scratching my head while changing the ign barrel. There are two types apparently but you will get to that point soon.

You have to put small flat blade screw driver in to that slot on barrel case, so access required. While pushing in ( not to brutal) work with key and turn the barrel by 90 degrees and pull it out. I don't remember but you might need to return to ZERO and press in 'park lights' button to turn it fully home and pull out from the case

Photo above, lower barrel - you can see the half round slot near the rh end where the 'latch' holds the barrel inside case.
Next to the slot there is little pin which travels in matching groves inside the case. The groove is 'L' shape and this is why you have to turn back the barrel to withdraw it from the case.

Give it few goes:
1. Key fully in,
2. Release the latch with flat blade scd.
3. turn barrel back.
4. withdraw barrel from case.

Which type your old key is and which type your new barrel is?
As you might need to do this as well.

First thing after breakfast I attempted the great task of changing the ignition barrel with the cowl still on. No luck.(n)

After poking about and feeling my way in there I could find the hole and attempted to poke into it (Matron!) with allen keys, bend pieces of stiff steel wire and something else bent and filed to suit and thought I could get it, but no luck. The rectangular hole is not in direct view when looking from below the cowling and is on the top side of the switch casing, this of course can be seen in kolza's first photo. I'll just have to be pleased that I've managed to rationalise Pandani's keys down from four to three and maybe in the future I'll tackle it again.

If any of yous find or know a way, don't keep it to yourself.

Thanks to varesecrazy, panda1408 and kolza for all help, just a shame I couldn't make it work.

:spin:FINALLY GOT IT:spin:HAPPY DAYS:spin:

After yesterday's failure and a fresh head of thinking today I came up with the idea of using some plastic strapping tape to release the catch holding the barrel. I was expecting to have many attempts but got it to work on the second go.

I've added a bit onto AndyReact's How To Guide for replacing the ignition barrel for those that need to use this alternative method.

http://https://www.fiatforum.com/panda-classic-guides/435787-how-replace-ignition-barrel.html

So I had my keys stolen. I had a new key cut for my ignition, and ordered a new set of keys and locks. I have fitted new locks to my doors and I only have the ignition barrel left to do.

I followed the guide in the 'how to' section, however when I turn my key to the mar position, and I press the little metal but with the screwdriver it still won't budge. Any ideas?

if my memory serves correctly the metal tab gets push up rather than down if i read you correctly?
