hi. my 1994 1.0l fuel injection fire wont run. It all of a sudden lost power and started making a slight knocking noise then cut out. When you do eventually get it running again you have too keep revs on or else it cuts out! and wen u rev it, it knocks and occasional backfires. the spark plugs are black so it could be fueling mixture incorrect and timing is out...any ideas of how to resolve this as i dont know how to adjust these and my haynes manual only seems to cover the non injection version engine...?

cheers in advance
adam:)

First of all I'd replace all plugs, and if you don't know when they were done I'd change the HT leads also.

If that dosen't work then it could be something like the crank shaft sensor affecting the running and idling. Without it the engine won't run, so if there is a slight fault sometimes it will and sometimes it won't, or it can make the engine run in a paculiar manner.

hope that helps. Jon.

I'm not sure if you can start engine at all with crank shaft sensor broken...?

It also could be stepper engine (idle engine) broken....

All depends on how is broken

If it's just 'defective' you could start it. A friend had this problem on her 2003 Sciento. It was a broken wire to the crankshaft sensor. So it would start and idle, but cut out as soon as you applied the rev's. So similar might happen with rough idle

dont think there is anything wrong with crank shaft sensor. how could i test that? the engine is throwing oil back up the throtle body aswell! looking like new engine.. upgrade to a punto 55!

1242cc 16v Punto engine!!!

Panda Sport's done it as have a few others.... Check the threads on here... I think those are about 85bhp without tweaking...

Good luck. :)

I'm not to sure :p  I just think visual inspection. Also check the plug (around the drivers side headlamp somewhere iirc) to see that there is no corrosion affecting connections.

The oil in the throtle body dosen't sound to good. Not sure if anyone else knows much about what is cause that and how to stop it.

ye wouldn't mind..but its just alot more messing than dropping a 55 in! plus cant find any 85 engines our breaking cars. Have any of you guys found owt...?

I got a bare engine from a fire damaged car for £22 on ebay!!:D Problem is that I haven't got anything else to make it go... They must be out there tho...

To be honest it really does sound like a lot of messing about to me too:eek:... For my purposes I reckon the 8v would have been better but we'll see... It's in the garage waiting to go on the stand and I'll try my best!

cheers, Luke. (y)

guys im half way through putting a 1996 punto 55 s engine in my 1994 1l fire but the gearbox and driveshafts seem to look different.. will i need to swop the gearboxes over? i thought it was a straight swop..?

cheers, adam

Hello Adam, as I'm far from knowledgeable about this all I can think of is pointing you in the direction of panda sports post about how to drop a 16v engine into a panda, I seem to remember he had to modify the block to fit the panda box.

Good luke and all the best, Luke.(y)

P.S. if you get it going in time bring it to Gaydon on the 11th (see events section of the forum...) ;)

You need to use the Panda's gearbox fitted to the punto engine for a straight swop. Depending on the Punto engine block you may have to shave a bit off the back of the panda starter motor to get it to fit.

cheers! so will i have to change the clutch or release bearing aswell or will it marry up..?

yes iv read that. it just doesn't say anything about which clutch or release bearing you have to use...?

I thought that there was something about cluch (second paged, I asked about it) and there should be somewhere something about release bearing...
I remember that somebody elso fit 1.2 8V (SPI) to Panda and he used cluch and release bearing from Punto...(but he said that realese bearing from Panda should be OK aswell)

sorted! ye all seems fine just kept the punto clutch and release bearing on. i have now encountered another problem as one of the fuel line pipes sticking out of the throttle has snapped! so was thinking about putting the panda throttle body onto the punto engine...but will this affect the performance or are they exactly the same..?

If it's 16V you can't but with 8V SPI you can try...I may be smaller throttle diameter....
I think I've got throttle body from Punto 1.2 MPI...but there is no injector in the middle :(
