Hi folks,
After a change of plugs, oil and filters many of the nasty runnig sounds of my 1988 4x4 have disapeared. However one sound reamins and it seems to be coming from the distributor thingy area.

Its a rythmical tappy metalic scraping sound and is constant.
I was concearned it was the first cylinder, however it does seem to be coming from the distributor.

Its very audiable.

With the car being 16 years old and previously neglected maybe I should just re-new the distributor and leads and arm?

Any thouhgts appreciated.
Thanks
Jonathan

No it doesnt seem to effect it with the clutch.

It does disappear with a little throttle or choke (Rev's?).

So basically it happens at idle.

Cheers

Just a thought but it could be the alternator, i fitted an alternator from a scrappers and the bearings were busted and it made a really annoying sound. Its 'fairly' easy to check this by removing the fan/alternator belt. The dizzy is easy to replace and its probably worth doing, who knows when it was last replaced? The rotor arm and cap will cost you no more than a tenner but i have doubts if thats the cause of your noise to be honest.

If you're absolutely 100% certain it's the distributor, and it's the Magnetti-Marelli electronic one...
I have the one from my CLX which used to cut out on me when it got hot [:(!]

As far as I know it is mechanically fine (IE no untowards noises), and the only bits missing are the (80p??) "O" ring which stops it leaking oil all over the place, and the vacuum advance cartridge.

looks just like this:

With a bit of effort you could swap the pick-up coil and amplifier module over and have a good, quiet, distributor.

For you - 5UKP plus postage ;)

Hummm, ill pay close attention to it.

These sounds on cars have a habit of coming from somewhere completely different to where they seem to be in my very limited experience.

Cheers for the advice/offer
Ill keep it in mind.

Thanks
Jonathan
