General engine options for panda

General engine options for panda

Ah, the eternal question.

999CC 1108CC FIRE Engines, common to Uno and Y10

903CC Fiat 127 Engine, presumably 899CC Version too used in Cinqs.

1049CC 1301CC "Brasile" Engines - in Europe fitted to Y10 Turbo, Touring and GTi.e.

Also the 50HP 999CC Fire fitted to 4x4 Models.
And that's about it without major work.

Fix It Again Tony!
Would swap for X19, Montecarlo Spider or GT.i.e in average/poor condition! Scottish based would be nice.

Another one for the FAQ then:D, to be up soon on a crappy server near you(my isp page, tiny but it´ll do for now as my server keeps getting errors)

so the Uno 1.4 is out of the question:(
or the 1372cc, i understand the 1301(turbo) requires major mods but the 1372 is an overbored 1.1 right?

slightly off topic but:
I've got tons of webspace that is sitting about doing nothing if its needed.
about 1 gig, 2gig bandwith allowance, php, perl mysql....

Well i´m not quite happy with the FAQ yet as i only got a few topics(still reading old posts:D)
heres what i have(any additions feel free to post/email them to me)

-replacing clutch
-replacing transmission/swap to 5spd
-parts compatability list(4 pages and growing daily:p)
-carburettor overhaul
-suspension replacement(springs and shocks)
-engine mount replacement
-tach instalation
-turbo/supercharger conversion(may be seperate from faq)
-intake installation
-electronic injection conversion(maybe if i get it right)
-now have compatible engines for swaps:D

and soon will have lots of pics to complement every question as i´m taking another panda apart:)

The 1301 and 1372 belong to the same family of the 1116 unit...not the same as 1108Fire one;).

<--Can my face look like this if I meet a Danish and/or a Swedish supporter!?

This is the post I have been waiting for. I have been thinking about a more powerful engine for the panda, but was not sure what would fit. Is there anyone who knows for sure that the Y10 Turbo 1050cc will fit in the car. If it will, is it straight bolt in or do you have to customize the mounts and brackets. How about the transmission and axels. Would I need the whole front end of the Y10 or just the motor. I am starting to really think about doing an engine upgrade to the little Panda. If I can find a good transplant from the local junkyard for a low price and it is fairly simple to do I would do it. Also is the Y10 have a fuel injection system or carburetor? Because I would also need the computer from it if it is injected. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Y10 turbo uses carburettor. It will fit with only some mods to acomodate the turbo (the radiator has to be moved). I kind of got the answer a while back and it didn´t seem to be very easy to do, heres a link:

https://www.fiatforum.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=12806

BTW you do know the Y10 turbo is extremly laggy and that was why i started my own custom conversion right?

Being carbureted will make a bit easier to do since I will not have to worry about the computer stuff. Did not know it was laggy, but a turbo is better then no turbo. Also, the extra power will be fun to have. You say that "some mods" are needed. Do you or anyone out there know how drastic are they. The radiator should not be the biggest worry. How about the motor mounts. What about the block to transmission mounting. If the motor will not bolt to the tranny, then I will have to put in the Y10 tranny/axels unless the Panda axles are compatible. If the block bolts to the transmission and the motor bolts in to the existing motor mounts then the project does not sound to hard. That is if I can find a Y10 motor in good shape for cheap. If anyone has any more info I would greatly appreciate it.

someone with a better knowledge on this topic will eventually reply. But i think it´s better to use the Y10 tranny even if the pandas do fit, mine is starting to make a high pitched sqeeling sound from the added power even though it runs good i´m fitting the Unos when it does break. Engine mounts are the same as far as i know. Also remember that Y10 turbo pistons are impossible to find nowadays.

later addition:

heres a pic of a Y10 fire engine(DevilRoad)

and heres a pic of a Y10 turbo engine:D(a real one this time:p)

I now have the whole punto includind these extras:

1242 FIRE motor(16V MPI version)
3 keys(2 red, 1 blue)
ECU and wire loom
full ignition and wires
6spd tranny(the owner had already given it to me before)

Any ideas as if it will fit in the engine bay i know it fits in a Y10(that was it´s purpose before the guy totalled his Y10 and was left with a smashed Punto and a bunch of parts)
thanx for any help

The hole I can see in the manifold in the picture above is the standard "tin" bracket for a normal "FIRE", fixed with two of the manifold bolts, for the hot air into the bottom of the air filter airbox.
It connects via a "concertina" alloy pipe, which is located at the bottom by the flange on the hole.

It stops carburettor icing in the winter, this far north...

Regarding fitting the Punto bits - if you can get them in a Y10, I'd expect to be able to get then in a Panda: it's the same animal from the knees down :)

P.S. in addition to the bits you've got you might want the fuel pump:
MPI is higher pressure than SPI.

The punto is complete so i can get the pump and then i have the additional bits. The punto is an sx i think(the car is terrible can´t find badges but owner says sx). Also my engire is the 1000cl which is a fire and i don´t have that hole, why would that be?

BTW heres the thread where i found this pic

I took the hot air hose, because in Portugal there is no need of that, so i blocked in the air box, just cold fresh air..., smoke you work very fast....

PS: smoke u got mail

I got some friends who want to see a panda kill a few golfs so i get lots of help finding parts;). How come my engine doesn´t look like that, the carb is slightly bigger(it´s a weber 32)and the manifold doesn´t have that hole. Sorry from the post i thought it was a turbo[xx(]

Just checked my mail:). I also just noticed the Punto engine thats in the car has a damaged cylinder head from the crash(the camshaft is actually seperated on two places(broken bolts).I´m now going to start looking for another body shell for the panda unless i can fix the crash damage to the left front fender(side panel only ). Anyone know if this can be removed?thanx
