My Panda has started making a new noise!
I notice it just as I start the engine, I hear a fait crackly sound and it gets a bit louder as I start to raise the clutch pedal, I only notice it for the first few minutes of driving then either is goes or I cant hear it due to traffic noise.
Now I dont know if i was a pit panicky on the way to work worry about clutches and gear boxes, but a couple of times when I changed into 4th gear it almost sounded like the clutch has sliped because i heard a nasty grinding sound as I changed gear.

it might be something or nothing but I've just forked out for a new head gasket and would rather not have to spend any large sums of money for a good few months yet!

OK, might not be the problem but cheap clutch kit on Ebay for 999CC Panda.

Reconditioned clutches are not really for the connoisseur but it is cheap.

Nowt to do with me so bid at own risk!

Fix It Again Tony!
Would swap for X19, Montecarlo Spider or GT.i.e in average/poor condition! Scottish based would be nice.

Hi, sounds very much like weak clutch springs. If your clutch was a reconditioned unit then It is almost 100% certain to be the fault. They re-condition everything but the springs. Your springs could have done a million miles whilst the disks were still in the box.
Sorry, but....recon clutches should be avoided at all costs...........

My clutch is the original ('92)
I think i was being paranoid about the gears slipping but the noise only happens when I start the engine from cold, raising the clutch just seems to make it a wee bit louder.
If its been running a while and I switch it off and on again there is no noise.

The gearbox in my my old Y10 was still going strong at 120,000 miles. Sounded like a tractor though at idle, but worked fine.

If just noise and no other issues I would be tempted to leave it - for now.

It could be a lack of gearbox oil - when the car is moving the gears move the oil around and so the noise goes away. At rest it drains back down and so the noise reappears. Maybe

Regards,

Martin

Theres nothing wrong with reconditioning clutches, if it's done right.

The covers are inspected before they are reconditioned, if the diaphragm is not in good nick, it gets binned straight away, then the rivets are removed and the cover and the actual face of the cover are shotblasted, then the face is ground on a surface grinder until it is completely flat, the drive straps are then re-tensioned and the face riveted back onto the cover.

The friction plate is also inspected and if it's ok, then it is shotblasted and new liners riveted on, you should always try to match the liners to the cover, if the cover has .5 of a millimetre removed, you use liners that are .25 of a millimeter thicker, in order to maintain the correct clearence when the clutch pedal is depressed.

Can you guess what I do for a living?:p:p
