General Mid-throttle injection problem in Lancia Y10

There's an in-line filter* on the Panda - it's under the bonnet, just behind the washer bottle, or thereabouts.

Take care to depressurise the system before you undo the clips.

* it never seems to get changed.
When it has been, it may be worth a strong dose of injector cleaner in the fuel.

Another update:

I replaced the fuel pump with another one from Mario's bag of spare parts... no change whatsoever with the problem.

Then I went to buy a fuel filter and got talking with the mechanic there... I described the problem and he suggested right away that I use injector cleaner. He explained that if the fuel is not pulverized correctly, then it will not burn properly, thus explaining the black smoke out my exhaust.

Sounded bang on to me... so I dispensed some 40 Euros on the best bottle of cleaner and fired it in there with a full tank of gas. Now I'm drivin' 'er hard to try and clear the sucker out... sometimes I think it's making an improvment... but maybe it's just my imagination.

In any case, written clearly on the bottle is "fixes holes in acceleration"... about the best way to describe the problem I was having. So... hmmm... I hope that'll do it. But then there's probably 150000kms of crap in there... and they recommend this cleaner every 3000km!!

Fingers crossed!!

Arrrrggggg!!!!

I'm going mad with this problem!!!

Almost through the tank of gas with added fuel injector cleaner... and today I could barely drive the car. Back to being digital!!! [:(!][:(!][:(!]

Please... does someone have any other ideas??? Otherwise I'm losing patience and I might just bite the bullet and smash the sucker!! (And that would be a shame... it was such a nice trusty Lancia... before!! :()

hey fatnote,

me and a buddy (nacho on here) rebuilt our carburators today. a 750 fire and a non-fire (pictures and a post coming soon). after putting it all together, i am having the same problem as you are. i imagine it is not as bad as yours, though. if i press the gas pedal down slowly then it accelerates smoothly but if i give it a lot of gas quickly then it chokes and sometimes comes close to stalling and other times it revives and revves up relatively smoothly. i tried adjusting the carburator for mixture and there are only 2 screws that i can see that could possibly be for adjustment. there are both at the top "inside" the carb. i had one of the screws a little loose and the engine ran a little leaner it seemed but i tightened it down all the way and it runs a little richer... the problem doesn't go away with choke on/off and with that screw tight/loosened. it would seem as if it is a mixture problem, but you'd think with the choke on/off the problem would improve/worsen. i've double checked to make sure i have all the hoses plugged in. i could say that the o2 sensor is out of the question as is a dirty carb. i suppose that i could have missed something while putting the carb together and i'm trying to think of what i could have missed. i hope this helps.

cheers,
serge

p.s. i'm a little tired now and i have to get to bed. i've read most of this thread previously. tonight i just skimmed over it. i'll reread tomorrow to make sure i didn't miss anything.

Just to clarify - injection, or carburettor??

If it's injection - Bosch, or Magnetti-Marelli?

If Bosch, there is an Italian URL which Enzo provided that gives chapter and verse on fault finding: what values to expect on various sensors, throttle body etc.

<s>If you need it, and can't find the reference I'll have a look for it over the weekend.</s>

Here it is...

How's your Italian, then [?] :D

For some general advice on Lancia injection problems, inc Marelli see:

Sadly not Y10 specific, the author is more of a delta enthusiast, though his Beta HPE takes pride of place in the garage.
