General Badge Cleaning: Removal & Re-fitting

Hi,

I have a 1986 Panda and I am attempting (somewhat unsuccessfully at this moment in time) to clean the badges on the boot. I would like to remove the badge and then refit it once the paintwork and the badges themselves have been cleaned. The 'Fiat' badge is of little concern as it is square enough to allow the paintwork to be cleaned sufficiently around the edge.

The real problem lies with the 'Panda1000S' badge, which is such an awkward shape, the only way I feel I can properly restore the badge and the paintwork that lies beneath is to remove the badge completely. I do however have reservations; first and foremost the structural integrity of the badge; secondly how to safely remove the badge without damaging the paintwork; and finally if this at all possible without doing irreversible damage to the fixings that connect and hold the badge to the boot surface. (I have successfully removed the facia panel on the inside of the boot hatch but I still fail to gain access to the badge fittings).

I would really appreciate any help anyone could give regarding this problem, or whether or not anyone has experience with the removal and refitting of the badges. I can include photos if this would help. Many thanks in advance,

Hi Gary

There are two little pegs on the back of the badge that fit into grommeted (if that's a word, lol) holes in the hatchback. There's also some sticky foam there too holding it all together.

Tis more than likely that after 21 years it will break if you take it apart, mine did and it was only a 1995. But weirdly no matter if it says 'Panda' or 'Panda1000S' the holes are in the same place so you could get one of the later badges from a fiat dealer and pop it on as long as you can stand the world not knowing your driving the height of luxury anymore!

I took mine off for cleaning too, as e505jpy says, you need to sort the little pins behind whilst taking the badge off. I used a credit card for this, being careful not to damage the paint. Another common method is using tooth floss to 'cut' through the glue/foam pads.

To put it back on i just pushed it back and the pins re-secured. Its slightly loose without the foam pad but perfectly ok

Tip: use tar remover to take the foam off the paint

A little tube of black mastic from the local DIY store is great for sticking on badges, hehe!

I would like to say thank you for everyone's suggestions as to how I could remove the badge and I'm pleased to say the badge came off without any problems, and has been cleaned and repainted. I believe I've been lucky as it reattached with no problems! Thanks to all who have taken the time to help out. Your time and effort is much appreciated.
