Hi,
93 Panda Selecta 1108cc.
Occasionally when driving, the auto box gives a kind of ''whistling sound'', which lasts for around 4 miles. then goes away.
Is this a sign of impending doom, ie, its about knackered?
I know these auto boxes are a bit of a mystery to most of us, but perhaps somebody has experienced the same sounds.
Thanks in anticipation
Cheers==============

Check the fluid level and colour, the level may be low. ATF expands as it gets warm which could be the reason for the noise going away after it warms up.

If the fluid is not bright red and smells like burnt cheese the fluid needs changed.

If there is no history of the fluid being changed I would change the fluid AND the gearbox filter.

Sorry to bring this old thread up. I'm now having the same problem on start up since having changed sump and fluid. The level's on the dipstick read ok when both hot and cold, but was wondering if I should pop a bit more fluid in, but don't want to over fill because of the damage it can do.

Jon.

No don't overfill.....as for the original problem ? I'll just pray it has nothing to do with the belt.

Ok. Many thanks for confirming what I thought about over filling. It's ok when warm and when restarted and sound / drives normally so don't think its the belt. If it is I hope the thing goes sooner rather than later as I'm about to spend a few hundred quid on her for next MOT as one done for last owner was a back hander I think!

But hopefully all will be good and well.

Jon.

you are checking fluid level with engine running yes?

Yep. Both just after start up, and when hot (gear box hot, as well as engine of corse) and checking against the hot and cold levels.

When cold it reads slightly under max, but on hot when warm it reads spot on Max.

When I changed the sump after the flippin' pot hole, I measured in exactly 1.8L as recomended by both the Haynes and Fiat Dealership manuals.

Jon.
