Fast idle on '87 Ritmo/Strada

Hello!

I have a 1987 Fiat Ritmo (Strada) 85S, with the 1498 SOHC engine (149.A5.000, also found in some Regatas). It has a Weber carburettor (32/34 TLDE/150, I think) with a manual choke.

The problem is, when I start the car when the engine is cold, the engine runs at around 2000-2600 RPM. It does so for several minutes (ranging from 2-10 minutes) before it reaches "normal" idling speed (somewhere around 800-1000 RPM, I think). This seems to coincide with the engine temperature reaching around 50 degrees Celsius.

Should the engine really fast-idle at this high RPM and for this amount of time? And if not, what might be the problem and how do I fix it? :)

Might be worth mentioning that the engine idles normally when I start it when it's warm.

hi
I think you need to check fast idle control on your choke mechanism!

It's propably just weber's automatic to get the car running during winter. Nothing to worry about. Do you use the manual choke in addition, or is it just running at 2000 rpm during startup? We had the exact same car earlier. Fell to pieces litteraly: No clutch, shifted gears on engine speed. Hand brake ripped off. Exhaust fell off in one piece - incredible sound afterwards. Windows just broke when jacking car. Brake fluid pumped out of both rear cylinders. Wipers, lights, heater worked occasionally, fixed after welding in some short circuits in the fuse box. But the engine!!! Incredible. It was impossible to destroy, and we tried!

So don't worry about the idling.

Morten.
