Removing the cam boxes (I think you mean cam carriers) will NOT help. A new cam carrier to cylinder head gasket will be required and this will torque down with different thickness to the original gaskets. This will throw the vavle gaps out and you will be forever chasing you own tail.

yeh i thought of that hence the tools and not removing said cam carriers......

mmmm, seen a picture of the tool to push down the bucket, might have to do some jigery pokery in the garage to make one then i need to make a u shaped thingy to hold the edges of the bucket down to get shim out....very descriptive eh...hahahaha

PS, i did measure the gaps a few days ago and i noticed that 1 gap on the exchaust side was 3 thou larger than the rest, wonder if this is the noisy one ???
 
I use a bent bicycle tyre lever to push the shim and bucket down. Bend it to give sufficient clearance to get the shim out, without the 'handle' end being obstructed by the cambox wall.

For the 1608, 1756 and 1995 Fiat 'twink' engines, I've always used a flat blade screwdriver to hold the bucket down whilst removing the shim.

The tolerance for valve clearance is +/- 0.05mm which is just under 2 thou. so your 3 thou. is only just outside tolerance.

never thought of that...will source such a tool this weekend and do the checking again.
have a few shims from another head and spare from last shimming session so will be having fun soooooon....haha

Now another stupid question, i presume the piston has to be on the down stroke before you push the bucket down, my pistons have cut outs so will it miss if not on down stroke....
