I have an '81 Spider 2000 Turbo. I never know when, or if, its going to start. Sometimes, when I turn on the ignition, the dash lights up (as it should). Then, when I turn the key to Start (AVV), everything dies.

Other times, when I turn the ket to start, I hear a motor whirring either under the back seat or in the trunk, but the starter won't engage.

Yesterday, I had to manually push the car and pop the clutch about 100 yards before it started. This morning it started right up.

If I get it running, I'm afraid to turn it off until I get home.

I'm mechanically declined, so if you suspect what my problem could be, please be specific. I've tightened the leads to the starter, but I don't even have any idea where are the solenoids nor the starter relay.

i would hazard its a starter issue.1st thing is to check the starter connections are tight and clean.
might be the starter just needs lubed and is running dry

check main earth strap
