If I was to buy a car from ireland, meaning that it was registered in ireland...apart from actually getting it back here, would I have any other difficulties? Or is it just a case of notifying the DVLA that the car is now in the UK??

As it's coming from R.o.I., I'd be surprised if there are any differences between a U.K. car and an Irish one, with the possible exception of the speedo which may, or may not be in kilometres.
It should be RHD and have headlights that dip to the left. I've actually seen Irish registered GPs at a FIAT dealer in Greater Manchester that have come back off contract hire in the Emerald Isle. They had been sent straight to the Dealer for sale so must have satisfied Type Approval and so on.

As you've no doubt appreciated Ireland is two places.

One is read easy, the other a bit trckier.

Which one are you considering importing (or not, as the case may be) from.
