i have nothing better to than bounce my current choice for next car off forummers :)

opinions?

Get top one....my favourite bmw of recent years (other than last m5) with the schnitzer kit on it (although unless the photo is wrong labelled that car has had a very comprehensive M3 lookalike conversion). Bottom one is somehow a bit drug dealer...

the top one is a complete M3 lookalike, correct :)

though id much prefer one with the M-tec equipment and suspension as standard, i dunno if i can find a decent one for the money i want to pay for it. Drug dealer cars FTW!

yeah i realised the other day that the 325i was the one to go for.

still want the sport equipment off the 328i though (not sure if the sport specs are the same on both?) including bilstein suspension and a lsd.

very nearly bought one this weekend, but decided to slow down and look for a really good one...

do you do much work on them? is there anything specific to look out for?

cheers

i work with bmws mainly so yeah.

main things they fail mots on are-

rear trailing arm bushes
rear brake pipes
front wishbone rear bush
front ball joints

other than that, they seem to be ok.

my boss has a 1994 325i, its got 240k on it (owned from new) and still running fine, only ever had the usual on engine, rocker cover gasket, coil packs, water pumps, nothing else, never had a wheel bearing go yet.

i wonder how cheeky it would be to go view a car with a little jack tucked under my arm, and check for play in suspension :spin:

surely it wont be too expensive for these parts though? mostly labour?

Well you do get a 4+/ 10+ discount on parts (y) But just ask your uncle what I paid a couple of months ago for my clutch/ flywheel change and that was him being most generous on labour costs IMO  AND I was looking at paying out again for clutch slave cylinder and gearbox/ diff oil change  Sure labour would be costly if you took it to Lloyds but parts are bad enough. I can also confirm the suspension issues (paid out a few hundred last year for the pleasure of that one), oh and they go through (£150 a pop) tyres quite quickly.

Oh the good stuff? They look good, they're fast, they're comfortable, they're safe :D Fair enough they do look a bit dated but one in mint condition looks really classy. IMO better an original sport than a lookalike M3 - if you want an M3 then wait and buy yourself a real one (y)

not overly expensive no, but when you get a car which needs all of that, plus for instance 4 new tyres, plus front and rear brakes then technically the car is a write off!

I hate to pee on your parade but I'm falling on love with these but I know it would cost a fortune even though its the 3.0D:-

get one bought then :D

my plans have gone on the backburner atm, im just scared of spending money... also see my sig....

still want one though....

A note for those buying e46 or e39 diesels, there are a few problems with them which means there's some work you need to do right away to stop it going bang. Oil breather filter change to the new style and manifold de-flap or change depending how flush you are, plus double oil services as they get older :) Had all this done on mine and it was still purring nicely and not costly if you go down the deflap route.

Whats manifold de-flap? :p

Oh and its really hard finding a Decent nick e39 5 series M Sport that hasn't got nasty wooden effect dash!.

the flaps can begin to rattle, and then drop off, sometimes allowing bits to enter the cylinders. removal before failure prevents it from happening.
