when i turn full beam on, this happens:

ABCD00102.JPG

when i press the brake lights, they work, but they put my front side lights on too.

i can get a set of front lights for £30 but with the front lights coming on and spots going off i'm thinking it could be wiring instead or even aswell, any ideas?

At a first guess if braking turns on your sidelights then i'd say the earths, give em a good clean :)

lol Jug, sister lol. my gf wont go anywhere near it

i had a look for the earths, can't see anything that looks like an earth, im not so hot on electrics as you may have guessed lol.

will have a look at bulb connectors when i get the chance.

either they ignored this on the MOT or it just happened lol.

Check the earth on the rear lamp clusters (in fact clean all the contacts on there), it's probably the brake lights can't get a good earth so they're finding another route through the side lights (if I'm certain the brake bulbs are a Stop/Tail twin element type).

Have you checked the bulb for the main beam problem on the O/S?

had a word with an auto electrical place down the road and they reckon worst case senario is the fusebox costing 60 quid, a common problem on that year of ford/escort.

i'm going to take it there wednesday but in the mean time does anyone have any advice for trying to find dodgey wires bad earths? would be great if i could sort it out without having to pay (y)

EDIT: i'll be taking it thursday as i didn't realise if i bught tax todayi'd practically loose a month, i don't know where i am these days lol.

£60! feck off they go for £10 at scrapyards and are easy to remove/fit. i must have replaced half a dozen of them in the past. they can cause all osrts of crazy faults, but personally i think your lighting problem is caused elsewhere.

its funny that i had the exact same problem on my escort, but that was a mk7 (or mk6 if you're a true ford man and realise there were 2 mk5's). that turned out to be a fault in the headlight.

well i might have a look at a scrappy tommorow, get new set of front lights and the fusebox, check the wires and earths if i can while im doing that, how exactly do i remove the fusebox and fit it to my car?

your easy may differ to mine when it comes to electrics lol

continuity between 2 circuits that are supposed to be isolated would tell you there was a short in the stalk, and no continuity through a single circuit shows that the switch contact is broken.
