My cousin wants to swap the motor from is M3 (1993 Lreg), does anyone know if the 2002 Z3 engine will fit (also the 3.0 litre version only been modded to 343 bhp apparently :D) would he need to change the ecu or not?

the 93 model uses the S50B30 engine, the 03 model uses the S54B32 engine, although the later engine is really just a redesigned version of the S50B30,in reality its a completely different engine so he'd need to change a hell of a lot more than the ecu.

iirc, the mounts are in a different place, the sump will need to be changed, ecu will too. Its possible, but hell of a job

Alan

Surely just cheaper getting a E36 M3 lump?

How did it die in the first place?

Liam

Cant find an E36 lump and he saw this one with 343 bhp for just about half the price of an m3 lump, 24/7 spares quoted him £1800 exc vat, He ran it without oil it still starts but its got a suspected bearing knock.

i've just realise that you mean the 3.0 from a 2002 Z3 rather than the 3.2 from a 2002 M3 so its the S54B30 engine, but thats still very different to the old S50B30, for a start it has the 6 electric throttle bodies, an emisisons contorl systme that isnt present on the earlier car. the S54 range saw that posh gearbox that i believe can not be mated to the S50, so assuming vice verda is true then a new box is needed, and then you need to use magic to make the driveshafts fit (i doubt 2002 m3 shafts will because that used the 6 speed vs the Z3's 5 speed)

Sorry i didnt mention the engine has a 5 speed manual box and not the horrible smg one  apprently (now im not saying this is true cos i dont know hence why i posted to begin with) you can mate up the engine ecu from the newer model to the key ecu/immobiliser of the older model so that you can still use the same key without programming it, all i want to do is fit the engine i have been told the mountings are the same but then someone else said they weren't so if they are then that will be my job done he will get the electrics done at the garage i am just trying to save hima bit of cash on labour as the garage has quoted him £1000 just for labour of fitting the new motor.

assuming the engine and gearbox mounts can be modifed to fit, how do you plan to make the M3 driveshafts connect to the Z3 gearbox?

Im still going to be using the M3 diff and prop so if i have any issues it will be getting a longer or shorter prop made up, either that or seeing as its a 5 speed manual like the original box i will try using the original box.

Most if not all BM's are RWD Jug.

Liam

yeah i know, mt fingers typed faster than my brain
by the time i realised it was too late to edit.

same theory applies, but instead of drive shafts you've got the prop shaft, as bandido pointed out. personally i dont think the M3's shaft will fit on to the Z3 box, and i dont tihnk the M3 box will fit on the Z3 engine. there is a 2 generation gap so you expect compatibility issues.

At worst it will have to be a custom prop, im sure i should be able to change the yokes of the two props and swap them over, if not then he will have to go to someone that will make one up for him.

hi mate i work for bmw to be honest you could be looking at changing a lot because the DME (engine control unit) will not start unless the EWS (immobilisation system) gives it a signal and that signal is built into the control units so only those 2 can talk unless a brand new DME or EWS is bought and the car is programmed. you will need to change potentially the whole key system including the key barrell, steering column and EWS control unit which should fit because a z3 is basically an e36 anyway but its a big job it will be the same if you take it out of an M3 evo aswell if you want i will double check this tomorrow but thats how the system works.

as for the prop that should be the same because as i said the z3 is an e36 anyway its e number is even e36
