Fancy a brand new Mk1 Golf Gti?

i've been dreaming about things like this for a long time. i'd love to see a retro revival where loads of the best cars from the 80's get a new lease of life.

lets face it, it still looks A LOT better than anything thats come out in the last 15 years.

apart from the skoda interior and 5door only aspect i'm sold. if a 3door was on sale in the uk i think i'd possibly be tempted to get finance on a new car, and thats not something i say very often.

must be a proper car, it would hurt pedestrians and doesnt have power steering :slayer:

why would i buy a new car which looks old

because cars from yesteryear look so much better. can you name a car in the same class that looks as good from the last decade?

Well, your signature provides a hint. I reckon the Mk1 Punto looks old now. Rounded styling and small, diffused headlights are definitely out-of-fashion. That goes for the Bravo/Brava and Marea too! :)

So, a Mk1 Golf is more than old, it's a classic...

The styling of the Golf was inoffensive when it was new, and it's inoffensive now. That is surely the important thing here. Compare it with the FIAT Multipla which FIAT felt the need to modernise (and tone-down) due to the overwhelming public opinion of it.

The Golf has had no such problems. Over the years it has evolved to a modern shape (rather like the Porsche 911), but really you can take each incarnation of the Golf and none was ever considered ugly. I think it's a good time to re-launch it, though of course in South Africa they never stopped making them! You see a large number of Mk1 Golfs and Mk2 Unos on the roads there.

Guigario's original, angular design was a breakthrough first time round- and it is a classic, but relaunching shows a real lack of imagination from the kings of toned down, conservative styling- VW.

It still looks good, but by no means does it look modern, it really does show it's age.

damn that looks soooooo good!!! i will be spoeaking with my colleauges in sa me thinks, see what i can do :D

the interior kinda puts me off a touch, all retro with a mofdern interior, but i think i could live with it once its been gutted and got a better engine :p oh and cage and and and

yeah but we have to obey the EU pedestrian safety crap and god knows what else for production cars.

you could take the engine out is SA, then ship them over seperately, then build in uk and register as a kit car. ;)

isnt that the best thing about it?

I'm just not a massive fan of cars from that era :)

i've seen new mk1 VW beetles before they sold them in some country up until something like 2003
Yup- Mexico produced them 'til 03. And when I went there last year- they were everywhere, but unfortunately some of them had big wings and silly wheels :( A bit stupid for a car with crica 30bhp.

yeah but it won't be a NEW car, with NEW everything, and I'm fairly sure the new citi golf's are galvanised.

BTW< you can get NEW vw caddi's (the pickup model) from the same ppl in southafrica

I'm also a fan of older cars, mainly based on the fact that you can't get them anymore and they stand out from the modern bulgemobile. and unlike that bloke next door who gets a new mundano 1.6 lx (in silver with steelies) every 6months for no good reason, you will have more pride in your car. and if you have more pride in your car, you are less likely to screw it up, by driving like a twonk, drink/distraction driving, park it properly not just dumped. understand how to get a 1000kg's of metal with only 30cm (squared) of hard rubber on the tarmac actually around a corner, and not cutting it off :worship: :bang:
