Hi, I’m both a new Fiat owner and new to the site! I have dreamt of owning a classic Fiat 500 for over 20 years and a few weeks ago drove a 1800km round trip to collect one from Italy.
The car is in a good restored condition and was running with no problems when I collected it. However since it’s 15 hour bone rattling journey back on the trailer I haven’t been able to get it to run. It had trouble starting and we only got it running by jump-starting it. Thinking that the battery was flat I bought a battery charger and charged it overnight. The second issue was that the indicators were not working which I put down to a loose connection. I also bought a multimeter to check the electrics. This morning I reattached the battery, cleaning and oiling the connections as I did so. I discovered a few loose electrical connections on one of the front bulbs and after reattaching them the indicators worked… but only for a few minutes before being unresponsive again. ? I checked all the fuses with the meter and they are all fine. I can’t find any loose connections and all the lights work. ( except the indicators.) now the windscreen wipers don’t work! ( which were ok if not crazy slow before) and the engine won’t even turn over and is totally dead even with a jump start.
So, all in all I’ve managed to make things worse. My question is, are the ignition problems, indicators and the wipers connected and it’s primarily electrical issues or are there multiple things going on? What would you advise I look at-do next? I’ve imported it but it needs to pass it’s test before I can even get number plates and insurance. I’m prepared to take it to a mechanic if it’s complicated but have the patience and enthusiasm to try myself if it’s not too tricky. Many thanks.

Welcome...
others will be along with much more constructive advice...
500s are simple compared to modern cars... a lot of electrical issues as you realise are due to bad connections... problem is they can be anywhere... a joint an earth strap a bulb holder literally anywhere.....
a logical approach s what s needed....
if you search online you will be able to find a wiring diagram....
Remember the wiring and buts may be original so very old...
corrosion on terminals can play havoc with things working or not....

Starting.. do you have fuel pumping to the carb? a spark at the plugs?

Never panic... people on here will do everything they can to get you up and running again.... you should not need a mechanic when you have lots of people on here who are very knowledgeable and rebuilt these cars from the ground up...

I think you may have a grounding/shorting issue and it could be anywhere. Recently I had similar, one of the front heater pipes behind the fuel tank popped off and caused the two wires going in to the cluster light switch to short out, turning this on would kill the engine.
If you have bad grounds it could cause havoc especially with lighting.

On a side note someone had been in and done a bit of creative wiring shall we say and when I was trying to reverse their offering I had to stop as the cable colours advertised in the workshop manual did not correlate with what was present on the car so just be watchful of this and of what others who have been in there before you may have done......

Thank you for all of your advice. I’m going through the wiring bit by bit to see if it’s shorting somewhere. I was checking out the wires that attach to the switch on the back of the dashboard. There are four wires spliced into two ( it’s hard to see exactly what’s going on with all the black tape. ) leading into the switch box. It looks like the four wires should be wired separately! Can someone send me a photo of how there’s is correctly wired please?
Thanks.

The wiring on the 500 is very basic and should be easy to repair. (I have owned 7)
Which switch are you looking at, as there are few on a 500 dash. If you have four wires, then I am assuming the light switch, which, memory permitting, is a two pole switch. The first click for sidelights and the second for headlights. This should have an input ( a live either permanent or ignition controlled) and at least two outputs, a single for the sidelights, and possibly two (one to each) headlights.
I have got a manual somewhere, but I am away from home at the moment.
Where are you based?
Check the earth circuits as they can be iffy. Particularly the engine earth strap as these have a tendency to break due to vibration.
