Hi
My pride and joy red 2007 4x4 panda has been great fun in the snow this last week but the temp gauge has been erratic to say the least, as of yesterday it’s stopped working altogether.
Any ideas ? I’m guessing thermostat but any advance on that before it goes to the garage would be appreciated. Cheers Paul

Is gauge registering nothing at all, or just rising a little?

This could be serious, so needs diagnosing and sorting asap.

Options:
Gauge gone pop. Inconvenient. And rare.
Sensor given up. Inconvenient. The fuel injection I think uses a second sensor, but if reliant on the one, it will now overfuel, thinking engine is cold. So needs sorting.
Thermostat stuck open. Engine will run cool, and ECU will overfuel. Needs sorting.
Wiring or connectors broken, damaged, disconnected. Usually easy to sort.

Coolant leak. Serious.
Don't just rely on there being coolant in the reservoir, leaks can lose coolant and the reservoir selfishly holds onto its contents. There are two bleed points, top heater hose near bulkhead, and top of radiator. Open them gently to ensure full coolant.

In normal warm-up, thermostat housing gets warm, but outlet to hose warms gently just through conduction. When thermostat opens, hose gets hot quite suddenly, so easy to check, just don't get fingers or clothing near the fan or any other moving parts.
If hose gets warm all along, stat is open.

Coolant loss from water pump is often invisible, as they tend to leak only when running, so the coolant is warm and evaporates, so no puddles.
Leak at radiator tanks tends to be gentle, so look for staining the colour of the coolant, should be pink.
Leak at heater matrix inside car hides well, so kick panels may need removing for a check. Causes a sweet sickly smell inside, and can cause condensation problems inside.

All fixable if caught early.

Thanks for the reply, gauge is completely dead and resting against the stopper.
I’ll get it to the garage tomorrow after I’ve had a look underneath to see what I can diagnose.

??

Do not use the car until you have confirmed there is coolant in the cooling system (see above). Low coolant exposes the temperature sensor (erratic readings) and soon after blows the head gasket.

is the temperature sensor getting a reverence voltage

is the coolant in the system

What is the resistance of the temperature sensor

is there any corrosion on the contacts of the temperature sensor

Hope fully the problem will not be in the dash end. Its run from the body computer via CANBUS

what is meant by erratic

normally with a faulty thermostat there is some reading

Thanks for all the replies. Really helpful ??

Coolant level is full, temp gauge needle not moving at all and fan not coming on so I’ve dropped it at garage this morning for a more thorough diagnosis than I can do. It had been a bit erratic last few days, maybe just a loose connection.

Does the coolant circulate? Fan not coming on could be coolant not getting hot enough due to stat stuck open, coolant not circulating, or sensor failing to tell the fan how hot it is.

There are some water pumps with plastic impellers. These can become loose on their shaft, so don't pump.

the gauge will move even with no coolant in the engine ? it does on the older engines with the sender at the back of the engine as in this case. No idea if the later ones with the sender in the thermostat are the same. I suspect there will also be enough heat soak to register

But please don't try this for yourself.
